There is no way a skater in a 35 second event should have their medal count the same as a 20 person hockey team playing six 60 minute games to win a medal.
How should they account for that?
|
Well how do they account for sports with multiple medals at different distances? Like swimming, speed skating, and skiing?
So for hockey you would get 20 extra medals for the count?

Canada probably finishes in 4th overall with maybe 21 total. Just a guess.

I'm going to say we finish 3rd overall with 26 medals. The short & long track medals will start piling up.

just ask any athlete, any event:
"would you go for a medal for your country at the least on the podium?" = "yes!"
"would you go for bronze if you are winning a silver?" = "no! i go for gold"
every single athlete will go for gold.
the standings 'north american way' gives a holistic view of the power of nations. because you cannot compare the sweetness of apples to oranges to pineapple to grapefruit. every country / athlete puts in money and effort differently. but it has a function to tell which country produces more results.
the standings 'european / asian way' always go for the tiebreaker in gold/silver/bronze/alphabetical order of country's name. i buy in that, because the ultimate goal is to win golds as many as you could!
embracing the 'number of medals standings' is somewhat giving you an excuse more. it's skewed.
of course, the point system is do-able. however, IOC has never come out to announce its take. but on their website, they go for gold/silver/bronze format.

While I agree that being Olympic Champion is the ultimate goal, I think that atheletes and their countries can be justifiably proud of being second or third best in the world.
I know I'm still proud of having the 5th fastest 400m freestyle swim for my age group in the City of Toronto when I was 11. Should I be proud of that, probably not, but I am because it took a lot of work to even get to that final and there were an awful lot of other kids in swim clubs that didn't make that meet, let alone the finals. I don't see celebrating silver or bronze as celebrating mediocrity, that's pretty damn close to the best in the world and I'm pretty happy with every medal. (Although gold sure is nice)

1st = 5 points
2nd = 3 points
3rd = 1 point
multi-athlete events = x2
Canada - 141
Germany - 133
United States - 126
Canada wins the Olympics by my made up medal count.

If we count all the medals equally, why don't we just count each countries number of participants to decide who won?
I like the idea of counting the number of team members gold medals and adding that to the total. Real teams though, such as in volleyball, hockey, soccer, etc. After all each member wins a medal, so each should count.
Anybody want to do a little research and get this total?

I would totally support such a system. It makes so much sense.
Going with total medals makes no sense at all. Silver says nice try but you didn't quite cut it, bronze says thanks for coming out. Gold says NICE JOB CHAMP!!!
But at the same time, you can't just go with number of golds. Saying 1 gold > 10 silvers, (or whatever) is also flawed. Also, finishing 4th is a cold, cold slap in the face in the current system. It should count for SOMETHING.

Simple it should be by gold if Canada has the most golds, it should be by total medals if Canada leads in total medals.
