My experience with big UPSes is the same but at work we also use the smaller ones for our workstations so my memory may be tainted by a few things:
1) I work in a 1950's era building downtown and the wiring is totally not up to modern standards. Up until last summer when they upgraded the electrical service to the building, there were frequent brown-outs.
2) When you have lots of UPSes, you remember the ones that fail, not the ones that keep working for years without complaint.
3) That place is a time vacuum. I've been there for 14 years so sometimes it seems like we just got such and such a piece of equipment a year or two ago when it might have been half a dozen...
