2 things, how many other pubs seat over 1000? You can't really compare it to another pub because it's not really a pub.
secondly, there's only one person you should be getting mad at for you getting turned away at the door because you forgot your id regardless of how old you think you look. The server/door needs to think you look over 25 not 18 or they have to ID you, the fines are pretty big for having someone who doesn't have ID regardless of whether it turns out they are of age or not.
As for service, yeah it can really suck on busy nights can't it?

It sucks even when it's not busy.
Obviously the ID thing was my fault, and I'm aware of the potential fines. Merely pointing out that they're the only pub in Calgary I've ever been to that ID's at the door. Lots of larger, reputable pubs don't even ID at the tables (Limericks, etc.).

Ive never needed a credit card to start a tab. I used to be regular, but now I seldom go. I was there 2 weeks ago and I didnt need one.
From my experience they have 2 or 3 really good waitresses, and a stable of absolutley terrible ones. Its hit and miss.
If you feel strongly about it, then you should personally boycott the place. I do that when I get bad service, and it makes me feel better. Its not like you are missing anything, the place is a dump.

I've had so plenty of good memories at Bullwinkles.
Parents spent at least $20 in tokens to keep me busy...
Then when they changed it to chuck E cheese for a short bit, i was pissed off.... so i always made it a habit to pull on the rat mascot's tail whenever i saw him

Never had to use a credit card to start a tab, and have always started a tab.
Was just there for a bachelor party last Saturday and they had no problem splitting the tab out per person, in fact, they asked us if they should do it.
Service was average. She came around enough but not alot.
I have found with my Schanks experiences that the service is very hit and miss. Certainly not one of my favorite spots, still a good place to watch a game and drink some beer though.

Crap bar, crap service, TVs aren't positioned very well IMO for game watching, a game-day menu is such a terrible idea. I only ever go to Schanks as a last resort, and I'm talking dire situations here.

I've been to Schanks once in my life. Garbage food, garbage service, and ridiculous prices for said garbage Never went back.
As for the credit card. That's common practice at bars.

When you say "need a credit card", do they take your card, swipe a pre-auth, and give it back to you OR take your card and keep the physical card until you pay your bill? I know some places want to keep your physical card - for example some waitresses at Melrose- do this. You should never give your card like this and Im not sure what their merchant agreement says about it but Im sure this could problems for you if you got unauthorized charges as per your cardholder agreement.

In 5 years you will be happy when you get ID'ed...... women
As for the OP question...
I am 27. Have always been asked for a CC to start a tab, generally we do cash and carry. I was there with my mom and they made her put a CC for a tab.
Service always sucks there. Thats why you need to sit at the bar

Man, I can remember being there on the night it opened, hardly anyone there. Then like three weeks later there were line ups. Got really chummy with much of the staff there so service was always good. I was a pretty constant regular through out high school and SAIT.
Haven't been back in a dozen years or so, things might have changed.
Knew the management at the one in Edmonton as well so I was always treated very well.

I'm shocked you even go to the bar. I mean don't you have a nice HD TV at home and beer in your fridge? Why leave the house?

I've only been to Schanks South once, but if it's anything like Schanks North, the service is horrible, it's overpriced, the wait staff is rude, and the beer selection is horrible (no Kokanee Gold, wtf?)
Yet somehow they pack the place on Friday / Saturday nights. I don't get it

Shanks North and South are terrible. The service is absolutely horrible, the food is terrible and I don't find their TVs very good for a sports bar.

Wow, although there are a few people around 30+ that have been asked for a CC... it looks to me like the majority of that crowd actually dont get asked for one.
As a rule I never EVER let my CC out of my sight for more than just paying the tab. I would never go and relax at a place for 3 hours to watch a game and let a complete stranger hold my card for that long.
Stupid place. It's going on my list of places to never go to:
The Back Alley (meat market- no thanks)
Schanks - (See OP)
Coyotes - (See Back Alley)
Cowboys - (See Back Alley + Prices)
Rusty Cage - (Screwed up a birthday reservation... badly)

Wasn't Coyotes turned into Cowboys, and now even that was expropriated by the city and shut down?
And doing a quick scan of responses, it looks like 7 people answered, 3 are asked for a CC, 4 were not asked for a CC.
