You're basically saying, great job by all of these realtors to create resources, knowledge and systems for listing homes that are so effective, but now let me use their hard work and cut them out of the deal.
On one hand I completely agree, but on the other hand it's a monopolistic situation that I think has pretty much prevented any real innovation in the Canadian real estate industry.

Only someone with tens of millions of dollars in marketing could probably ever have a chance to create a competing useful site for Joe Public. And so what? Doesn't MLS deserve to protect what they built after spending all that $$$? Of course.

Just kind of reminds me of the Microsoft browser monopoly case.

Here's a link to an article from 2008 regarding Housing123.com and MLS

I still prefer The Old MLS site myself... http://www.TheOldMLS.com

I here what you're saying cmyden, you raise a good point but still think MLS has in a sense earned it's monopoly. It's just the best system for doing what it does, kind of like the ipod of real estate searches.
It's apples and oranges, but to me saying MLS should share it's data is like saying Ipod has to make it's apps available to other devices and brands.

The issue with the housing123 guys is that they were using MLS data, not setting up an alternative system that would collect it's own data and do it's own listings. There's still nothing preventing someone from doing this is they're so convinced Realtors aren't worth the $$.

And I also like the old MLS better.

The new MLS is okay, as long as you know the zone numbers.
