I've listened to her album, and it's actually pretty good. And it's not the 'hit' songs I am talking about, but the stuff that never gets played on radio.
I actually like her. Haven't checked out much of her songs that aren't singles and play on the radio, but I think she's a pretty good artist because I enjoy listening to the song. Considering she writes her own songs and is actually talented in general, I respect her for that.
I don't think she'll be going away any time soon. She's gotten this big because she's got loads of talent, and a very good voice when performing live. As has been mentioned, she writes all of her own music, and all of the hits are catchy as hell.
She isn't riding her looks, lip synching, or depending on others to come up with new music for her, like so many other pop artists.
15 months into her career and she's sold 8 million records..I'd say she is pretty huge. I love her! I think her music is the best music to come out in a long time. I like everything about her.

No, she's riding her weirdo factor and supposed edginess. Its great that she writes her own songs but I don't see the voice thing, I watched a couple of her performances and her voice is average at best.
You're right she's not riding her looks, because she's somewhat pug ugly, and good for her for not lip syncing. But she's become a media creation based around weirdness and quotes, her music is pretty much forgettable.

Lady Gaga > Cannibal Corpse and this is coming from a metalhead. And yes she does write her own songs, before she was famous we was a songwriter for a bunch of pop groups. People just like to dig into things that are popular. She has a ton of talent. People rail on her for not being attractive, who cares honestly? About time someone got popular based on talent rather than beauty. I actually find her quite attractive, but a lot of that is due to her talent. She'll be huge and i mean Madonna huge.

I'm sure that Nena, Soft Cell, a-ha and Men without Hats thought the same thing as you.

I'm sure people said the exact same thing about Michael Jackson during the days of 'one white glove covered in rhinestones' and 'Bubbles the monkey.'
For the record, I have never listened to a single Lady Gaga song because I don't listen to the radio, and I am therefore neutral about the whole issue. Just making a point that being weird doesn't mean you're overrated.
I'm astonished by how famous this girl has gotten. She has literally had 5 top 10 hits in a row, 4 of them went to the top 5, 3 to the top 2, 2 have hit #1 (could be 3 tomorrow).
This is all in one album. She has literally made Electronic music acceptable and is probably the first pop act in a while to be geniunly talented, as she writes all of her music. Who's the last act to write their own music and have that sort of success? I'm thinking all the way back to Guns N' Roses? Eminem would count if you consider that pop but I dunno. Madonna and MJ?
I know a lot of you old farts and/or metal heads will dismiss her as a cookie cutter corprate popstar but she truely is talented. If you think she is cookie cutter then I suggest you listen to this song:
The song screams Queen and I garuntee if it was released by them it would be a classic.
I think she is a bright spot that shows that Pop music might finally be returning to a respected genre that it hasn't been at since maybe the 80's with MJ or maybe even the 60's with the beatles... We can hope.
