I don't know why we don't force restaurants to display their grades. You would think that would be mandatory.

^ NAGWAZ: On the up side, this is probably one place where they'd appreciate a tip of $25 worth of empties.

The bulk of those were found at Van's Pizza and Steak House at 2701 17th Ave. S.W., where inspectors noted food was not being stored at the correct temperature, kitchen staff were smoking, areas were poorly cleaned and there were mouse droppings. But the couple's second restaurant, Crete Souvlaki, at 2623 17th Ave. S.W., had also been inspected numerous times, resulting in reports outlining violations.
Some pretty harsh comments at the bottom of this one, a little overboard.
I've eaten at both these places, pigs.

I'm probably the only person in the world who's equally horrified by the glaring spelling error in the first paragraph of the Herald story:
Quote:
CALGARY - A Calgary couple who wracked up hundreds of health code violations at their two restaurants have been ordered to pay more than $40,000 in fines.
|
I see that particular mistake a lot on message boards. Publishing it in a newspaper is a whole other level. Don't these articles get proofread?
And yes, I realize that mouse crap on food is more important. Someone actually just recommended Crete Souvlaki to me the other day--glad I haven't eaten there.

Calgary Herald articles are usually rife with typos and grammatical errors.

Nah, a lot of people would have noticed. A lot of us have just given up on expecting basic spelling and grammar to be correct in the most prominent English daily in a major Canadian city.
When university students have to be taught basic writing skills and we walk around with cups of Tim Hortons (even the Americans have us beat on the use of apostrophes; see 'McDonald's'), there's clearly something wrong.

I taught First-Year University writing in the US for almost 10 years. Believe me, if anything it's worse there.

I know the owner and general manager for Luigi's pizza in Lethbridge, he's told me that he wouldn't be surprised to see the letter grade for restaurants in Alberta in less than two years.

I love the food there.. But I'm biased because I know them. Hanni is a great guy, and he and his family run the place. I can only order pizza from Hannis, Volos or Nicks. Everything else is inferior.
Haven't tried Buddy's but one pizza joint in the neighbourhood that makes my stomach turn is the one on 26th called Desperado's or something. Half a block west of the Sev. I've given that place two tries for their by the slice pizza and both times I was glad that my house was a 5 min drive away.

As someone who used to read electric meters and have been in their kitchesn every month - stay clear of the following places:
Burger Inn - Bow Trail
Nellie's Kitchen - Marda Loop

Our #1 complaint when I worked at Pizza 73:
Wings weren't cooked hard enough.
People love their overcooked, bone dry wings.

oh, I believe you, which is why I find it ironic and sort of sad that Tim Hortons doesn't have a freakin' apostrophe.

It's a trade name, not a person.

Like every other Canadian, I know it's a trade name. I also know that it's named after a person. Even if it wasn't, I fail to see how it would not be an egregious, basic grammatical error. If Calgarypuck had a chain of coffee stores, it would be silly to call it Calgarypucks and not Calgarypuck's. I think it's blatantly obvious what is intended by the name 'Tim Hortons', and it is NOT to conjure up images of multiple Tim Hortons standing side by side. It's a gramatically incorrect rendering of, obviously, 'Tim Horton 's'.

They're being cheap. It's done so that they have to make only one set of signage for the whole country.

I have been in all 4 kitchens and Van's is far and away the worst violator.
The kitchen in that place is disgusting and always has rodents, not only visiting but applying for permanent resident status.
Sophie's was a one time deal an now they have professional pest control services. A very responsible and professional kitchen there. Van's on the other hand, the owners are too cheap to have a decent pest control program an are in contstant vilolation of health codes. Crete Souvlaki is dirty but all in all not too bad. Spiros is fine - a one off in my estimation.

I have personally boycotted Nellie's ever since the losers had an Oilers logo painted in their window at the western 17th Ave location in '06. Those wankers also called their french fries "Freedom Fries" for a while. Overrated heat-lamped garbage.

An Oilers logo? Well, since I've never eaten there before, I'm just gonna continue not eating there and pretend that I've been boycotting them since 06 as well.
