Hurt - Johnny Cash
I know it's a cover, but I've never had a song hit me like that one did.

Good call on Left and Leaving, though I'd have to go with Everything Must Go or One Great City for The Weakerthans..
As for Hurt, Trent Reznor says that after Cash covered hurt, it was no longer Reznors song, it's Cash's.

Didn't see Left and Leaving on that list the first time around. That has to be my favourite song from the Weakerthans. The signature tune for what that band is all about though, is One Great City. What a great band.

I'm on a Ben Folds binge so I'll throw some of his stuff out there..
Rockin' The Suburbs or There's Always Someone Cooler Than You will make you laugh and want to listen to more. Then you'll starting thinking that piano rock is cool!
"Make me feel tiny if it makes you feel tall, but there's always someone cooler than you. Yeah you're the sh t, but you won't be it for long, oh there's always someone cooler than you!"

I'm not the hippest cat in the world either, but there are a few songs lately that have turned me onto some bands.............
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out..................great song, they played a bit on the opening act at the Grammys.
Modest Mouse - Float On...........great beat, pretty relaxing song.
The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies) - another great beat, good drum beat.
I also like The Shins.........a lot of mellow stuff, but pretty good.
I know a lot of this stuff is old hat to the college crowd, but I'm a little older.......it takes me a little longer
|
Hey KFF,
How do you like the rest of Franz Ferdinand's CD? I have liked the song Take Me Out for quite a while, but it wasn't until the grammy's that I figured out who it was. I'm considering purchasing the CD, so I'm interested in hearing your feedback.
Thanks!

Hey Foxy..................
I don't have the entire CD..........a have a couple of buddies who have it, and also went to their concert in Vancouver last year. They burned me some of their stuff, and I've also downloaded some more off the 'net. (legally, of course).
I like it............mostly upbeat stuff like 'Take Me Out', good guitar riffs, pretty catchy stuff. A lot of their stuff I've heard is pretty distinctive, some of the beats are pretty similar, but if you like 'Take Me Out', you should like their other stuff IMO.
Maybe someone else out there who has the entire disc can fill you in a bit more, I'm missing a few tracks off of it, but what I have and what I've heard I like quite a bit.
'Take Me Out' really turned me onto their stuff.

Yeah...........they have some pretty good stuff, some of it's pretty mellow. "Power Out" is a pretty good song, too. My same buddy that got me hooked on Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse got me hooked on them.
If I'm not mistaken, they're from Montreal.

Lots of good choices here...I agree 100% with Bubbly Toes, Float On, and Left and Leaving...
To add...
Ben Harper - Walk Away
Ten Foot Pole - The Getaway
Catch 22 - Guilty Pleasures...or It Takes Some Time...or 1234, 1234...Or 9mm and a 3 Piece Suit (man...some of these are HARD to choose from, but any or all could get you hooked)
Goldfinger - 99 Red Balloons (a cover, but it's the one that got me. LOTS of great stuff by them which could qualify.)
Reel Big Fish - She Has a Girlfriend Now (not the one that got me, but hilarious and will likely get lots)
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - Somewhere over the Rainbow or Phantom of the Opera or One Tin Soldier (all covers...it's a cover band. :P )
Phish - Waste...or Gin and Juice (cover)...Marijuana will likely get certain folks (another band with lots of qualifiers.
Moxy Fruvous - my Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors
Beastie Boys - Girls
Maybe more later, maybe not...

This is a great thread. I'm a huge music fan and was looking for some new music (like 2500 plus songs isn't enough on my mp3 player!)
Thanks to you guys I went and purchased Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, the Garden State soundtrack, and thanks to a 'similar' link on Itunes "The Libertines".
I've listened to most already and have to say thanks for the recommendations. Great stuff....
Thanks guys!

They are indeed. It's a great CD, I saw them on Conan a couple weeks ago and they were very strange live...i'd like to see an entire show. They are starting to get some major press in the states.
BTW I'm not much of a Franz fan but I think the new song Dark Of The Matinee is much better than Take Me Out. Does anyone else think that the singer looks like the lesbian bartender from the OC?

How's that Garden State soundtrack? I've heard good things. There's one song on it by a band called Mogwai, from Scotland. Unique sound, I think they are amazing. Can't remember the song from that movie though.

What's with the Postal Service cover on Garden State? The soundtrack is good but IMO that song was butchered.
|
What's funnier, is TPS version of the song is what you hear on the trailers! [/b][/quote]
The song in the movie actually is The Postal Service. That version of Such Great Heights appeared as a B-side on one of their singles.

I haven't listened to U2 in about 10 years. They went kind of wierd. My brother gave me the Atomic Bomb CD.
'Vertigo' has me thinking they are great again.
