What that terribly written article was trying to convey was that it was the coldest Dec. 14th on record.

The actual coldest day in Calgary on record was sometime in February 1893 where it dipped to about -45° C.

Either you know that's not what they are saying and are intentionally misrepresenting it to score some kind of rhetorical point in your imagination, or you didn't read and understand what they are saying (you know you can read and understand something without actually agreeing with it).
