Zelda: Twilight Princess is my favorite Wii game, I highly recommend it. If you are more intrested in party type games than go with any of Mario Kart Wii, Mario Party 8, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Wii Sports/Wii Sports Resort or Rayman Raving Rabbits. Oh, and do NOT buy Wii Play, terrible game.
I could never really get into Super Mario Galaxy, it's a great game but I still prefer Super Mario 64 over it.

To be constructive I'd put these 3 as solid purchases.
1) Metroid Prime Trilogy
2) The New Super Mario Bros
3) Zelda Twilight Princess

I should have mentioned that I have Mario Galaxy.
Thanks for all the suggestions... Mario Bros. Wii and Mario Kart are for sure and I'm leaning towards Rayman Raving Rabbids as the 3rd as the second Rabbids has very poor reviews as does Raving Rabbids TV Party... I am also looking into Mario Party...

The girlfriend and I were thinking about picking up a Wii for a Christmas present for each other as a joint gift this year. Went to Futureshop last night and picked it up. She already had Zelda and we picked up:
Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Wii Sports Resort
Mario Party 8
I wanted to get that Blox game, but I couldn't find it. All these games we bought seem like good casual games and good group games. The Zelda should satisfy my nerdy need to play a more involved single player game. I hope they have this sale again in the future because I would like to pick up Mario Galaxy, Paper Mario and the New Super Mario Brothers game.

Blockbuster has a monthly plan (about $30) where you can take out any one Wii game, and keep it for as long as you want. Trade it for another game any time when you are done.

Get Zelda twilight princess. Then you can softmod your wii and all the games would be free.
Make sure you don't update your wii though.

She asked for it because she wanted a fitness program for both of us.
But I could see how that could have backfired

$30 a month? Do you not have Gamefly north of the border?

IMO, avoid: WiiPLay, Smash Bros, Mario Party, NHL2k10. I dislike all of these games. Frankly, I just din't find them fun, and they are too hard to get into.
Games that I enjoy, and would recommend: wii sports resort, tiger woods pga10, any of the guitar or band hero or rockband.
My picks are based more on multiplayer, and my gf and I mostly play together so keep that in mind, although I also recently got Metriod Prime Trilogy and havn't gotten into it yet but it seems good. Other good ones are sonic and mario olymics, and wii fit can be entertaining unless you're "obese" like I am.

Yeah I do not get the love for Smash Bros. More like Mash Bros.
What a pointless unfun game.

No way. We've had some epic battles back home on Smash Bros. Once you figure out the combo's and stuff, it's an absolute blast.
Sport's Resort is pretty good.
I found Zelda to be impossibly hard at points. I still haven't wrapped it (but then again, I haven't played in over 6 months cause I'm not at home anymore).
Mario Galaxy is fun, but tough in a few spots (another one I haven't wrapped for the same reason).
Red Steel is awful, but it's kinda fun to rip around trying to shoot each other. There's only like...5 multiplayer maps though if I remember correctly.
My top three would probably be Mario Kart, Mario Baseball or whatever it's called (it's a blast to kick my yappy little brother's ass in this one) and probably Smash Bros.
Is the new Super Mario Brothers worth the investment? Might be a decent gift for my brother.

Super Mario Galaxy: full use of Wii's technology
Mario Kart: just a great game
Any "Wii" game (Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort, etc.): great fun and interaction with family and friends, and takes advantage of Wii's technology.
most other games are ports from better consoles and should be played on PS3 and/or 360, as they will offer better graphics and gameplay interaction.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Ended up buying Wii Sports Resort, Mario Kart and the new Super Mario Bros. Was going to go with Rayman Raving Rabbids but the game is only $20... might as well get my money's worth in this deal, so took Wii Resort instead... so far, games are great!
