I just think something needs to be changed with the UFA batches. The fact that Aucoin is a top UFA in the CPHL and he is a bottom/middle guy in the NHL UFA pool just is not right. Chara, Pronger, Gaborik, Bouwmeester are all top guys that went to the NHL UFA pool. Now I dont know if we can give compensation for letting a UFA walk or something but the UFA pools in the CPHL are middle/bottom pair D-men, and 3rd and 4th liners. A bottom feeder team cant get any better if thats the case.

Sure they can- just not through free agency.

The game is not supposed to be easy. Many teams have risen up from being basement dwellers. Look no further than the Sharks.

To put it another way - Bouwmeester didn't hit free agency in the NHL and in fact the way he joined the Flames is precisely how it works in the CPHL. The Flames stepped up with a good enough offer to get his rights, that's the type of thing that happens all the time in the CPHL.

The thing is when you set a price to sign a player, it instantly makes the player tradeable because you know you can sign him. So long as we have that there will be no top UFA players because they'll always get traded somewhere. So that means in order to have a good UFA group...we pretty much need to make every player with an expiring contract go UFA.

So whats a better alternative make all UFA players into UFA's where we'll essentially have no trading. Or keep our current system where a lot of UFA guys change hands in the offseason? I think the current system works better for a fantasy league myself.

Pronger and Bouwmeester were both traded and signed to extensions. Pronger still had one year left on his deal. When Gaborik left for UFA the reason was because he hated playing in Minny's system.

The same time I think that UFA's are getting harder and harder to keep in the CPHL and I think we will see more and more hit the open market.

I agree because some of the 3 year grid deals are starting to look really bad.

For instance The Wild's 3 year contract for Martin Biron is starting to smell. That sucker could be an albatross in year's 2 and certainly year 3.
