Because stray animals will love me unconditionally and humans tend not to.

In our case, we tried to make a balance between worthy humanitarian and animal based charities. There is a lot of need out there, its actually a very difficult decision to make when you start thinking about all of the things that you'd like to donate to.

My family friend volunteers at the calgary humane society in the cat section.

Someone brought in a very large stray cat, and she was doing some routine checks before putting it back in its cage. The cat was being very friendly, then she gave it a last pet while it was in the cage, then pulled her arm out only to have it pounce and bite her arm twice. The cat tore an artery and she was losing blood at a large level and had to rush to emergency.

Lots of the poeple at the center saw the incident, but no one ever checked on her in the hospital or the week after when she was recovering, no calls or anything. her arm ended up swelling up green and yellow up past her shoulder travelling to her neck the next day after the bite. needless to say the cat had some harmful saliva that caused a serious infection.

She called the center to insist that the large cat was vicious and had something wrong with it, which is normal and they are supposed to put them to sleep. the person at the center said they would "take care of it". When my friend finally returned to volunteering she followed up what had happed, and learned that they had allowed the original people who brought in the stray to adopt it. They called these people and told them they would have to put it down, and the family with little kids rushed to the cats rescue and adopted it. I'm not sure if calling the people is normal, or necessary, I would think protocal would be to off the cat and move on.

This act makes me think the society has a large amount of irresponsible people. If a child got attacked from this cat I am sure it could be fatal.
