Uhh...please don't. It's an animal, not a fad. If you get one, do it with the intent of keeping it forever - kind of like having kids....
Kittens get snapped up at the pound, but 4 year old cats have a low chance of adoption....

I wouldn't give a cat to the pound - I'm not that cold. One cat I traded for a camping BBQ and the other two I just gave away to friends for free.
I like kittens, but I don't like cats. What can I say?

It's an act of great irresponsibility?

They can live a really long time with diabetes, and it sounds like the cat is in great care with you.

I hear you.
I can't go into a pet store because every cat or dog in there is comming back with me.
I remember my wife telling me a long time ago that "you don't own your pet, your pet owns you". I thought it was an interesting comment.

..."I'll never again adopt any sort of feline" would be a good start.
Seriously, if you're not willing to make a lifelong committment (call it 20 years to be on the safe side) don't adopt a cat.

Whats wrong with pet ownership until the novelty fades?? I think you should be able to apply that philosphy to kids, and old people too.

Seriously it's not like I don't find good homes for my cats so I really don't see what the problem is. I'd like to get another kitten at some point because I think it would be good for my kids to have a pet and as I said, I do like kittens. IF we no longer want it I'll find a good home for it. If I am not able to find a good home I guess I'd just keep it but I doubt it would come to that.

Tell me when you get bored with your newborn and I'll take it off your hands. Newborns are so much cuter than 3 yr olds you know. Make sure you let me know by no later than 5 years - at that age they'll go for less on the market and it'll end up in one of those Romanian Orphanages. This way you can enjoy newborns more often. I offer you a Weber BBQ - nice and shiny. BNIB.

Why not take your kids to a shelter and do something productive like volunteer to play with the kittens there so they can get some attention instead of raising a cat to become attached and accustomed to you and then giving it away when you've become bored of it?
To me it seems like you're under the impression that pets are simply objects that can be passed around without any sort of impact on the animal. Not only is it irresponsible what you are doing toward the animal, but you're also teaching your kids to think of animals the same way, which is just as wrong, IMO.

I wish there was an UNTHANK button or something for some of these posts. Animals become a part of a family and you cant just give them away the way when they're "not as cute" anymore.
I rescued my cat (who was 5 at the time) from a rescue group. She is the sweetest kitty ever. She's now 7 and I hope she lives a really long time. The rescue group fostered her for almost a year because everyone came in and wanted kittens, and no one wanted poor Molly because she was "old". Their loss because I have my best friend now.

You should say ," I like the novelty of an animal when it is all cute fluffy, but once it loses its toy like appeal, I'll just barter it for a Hibachi." Please do the animal community a favor, and not ever buy another pet.
Molly the poorly housebroken and furniture chewing wiener dog that has given me a million reasons to unload her, which I could never fathom to do and break the commitment I made to when I adopted her...... greatly disapproves of you.

My last cat had diabetes. Injections 2x a day was annoying at first, but he got used to it and so will you. It really isn't a big deal after a month or 2.
Helped our guy live 2+ more years, but he was 16 when he finally passed on.

Wow Sliver ... I'm not sure what I find more bothersome about you: the fact that you've taken in animals knowing that you would probably give them away or the fact that you feel no remorse for it. Just because the cats end up in good homes does not mean the animal isn't impacted in a very negative way. What you are doing is quite inhumane and I really hope you reconsider the idea of maybe getting another animal.
If you aren't going to care for an animal for it's whole life what kind of message are you giving to your kid? I'm always curious when people who don't really like animals feel the need to get one for their kids because kids "should have a pet".

Thanks for the comments people
The little guy is part of the house hold here. However, it is troubling and I have to reevaluate my lifestyle due to this since I'm a frequent traveller and often away from the apartment. Fortunately, my neighbour is awesome and has taken care of him and has experience with diabetic cats.
I took over ownership of him after my former roommate had to give him up due to family reasons. He has certainly grown on me this past year. I still ensure he gets the best care in the mean time. I'm just freaked out right now on the added responsibility and extra financial contribution needed
