I'm just pointing out the duplicity in your arguments. You certainly did not differentiate the individual from the party in your thread title or opening comments, but you are very much trying to do so between the leader and the party.

Personally, I find this entire controversy hilarious, and just another sign of how big a threat the WRA are becoming in Alberta politics. It's not at all surprising that the Tories immediately tried to twist the comments into something far worse than they were - they are running scared right now.

As far as Carter's idiocy goes, it will be interesting to see if the party makes any kind of public example of him. As innocent as his comments may have been intended to be, attacking the person is never a good strategy, and showed a distinct lack of foresight. He should keep his commentary focused on the government's actions.

The guy who started this up is the same guy who created this controversy a few years back:

This kind of thing happens all the time in politics--parties are much looser, more ad hoc organizations than people think, and people act as free agents at times when they shouldn't.

This was a bad mistake--a childish, amateurish error, and my guess is Carter will face some sort of consequence. But the memory of the voting population is short. This won't be an issue in three weeks, let alone three years when the next election comes around.

Yeah, really. If anything, suggesting that it was a cultural slur is more of a cultural slur. Is there anyone who actually thinks that Ukrainian Canadians talk like that?

I don't think it was very professional to publicly make fun of another politician in that way, but I don't think it was bigotted or anything.
