Used to go to HFI in the 80s all the time. It was kind of a hole in a sort of industrial area near Chinook. Best chinese I've had.
The Silver Inn on Centre Street N is excellent too (not a buffet I dont think)

There's a Foody Goody in Winnipeg. I'll eat almost anything but I will never again set foot in that place.
Chinese buffets are supposed to be terrible, but not vomit-inducing.

HAHA - we call this the "beast from the east". Absolutely devastates you 15mins after finishing paying your bill and taking that walk over the little bridge.

Haha! I used to love going to Foody Goody when I was a kid. Was the food really that bad? I can't remember.

Smaller selections but the quality is terrific (for a buffet).
Plus they have the Mongolia style stir fry too.

It's a little pricy (IIRC it's ~$18/person, but this is right. Quality is actually pretty good.

So what's the best Chinese restaurant period (ie. not a buffet)?
I've been dying for some ginger beef (sadly, you can't find it in the US) and want to get some when I come home for Xmas. Definitely Calgary's tastiest contribution to the culinary world.

I really like the ginger beef at Spicy Hut on Edm Tr in Bridgeland. They might even do a buffet, I'm not sure.

I can see why as a child it would be fun....ice cream, bacon, and chicken nuggets at a "Chinese" restaurant.
But ya, the food really is that bad. The only palatable menu item is the fried chicken.
