La Rochelle, France. Lived there for 3 months in the winter of 1995/96 and it was the first time I had ever seen the Atlantic ocean. The France explorers who discovered Quebec - or "New France" - set sail from here. Once trade routes were established, most of the supplies for the new colonies were shipped from here as well. To ballast the empty ships down for the return journey, they filled them with rocks which were then used to pave the streets of La Rochelle. It blew my mind that the street I lived on was made of cobblestones from Canada.

Bourges, France, is home to one of the largest cathedrals in France. One of the earliest examples of Gothic architecture, it is the centrepiece of the city and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is stunning - especially by night.

Early morning near Wheatley River in PEI.
Went to PEI this summer for a couple of family reunions on my wife's side. Very picturesque.

In the Barranco Valley, Mt. Kilimanjaro . . . . . Kibo peak, the true summit, is above us. This would standing at about 14,000 feet. The glaciers are disappearing but largely through a process called sublimation, the water vanishing as vapour into the air rather than melting. As we circled Kilimanjaro, I was struck by how few streams or rivers we had to cross. A story about the glaciers from a few days ago. http://www.sciencenews.org/view/gene...d_soon_be_bald

Street scene from bustling Milan, the gothic Duomo in the background . . . . . . . I wonder if they got all those cows from Calgary.
