I think it was more like 10.

I was at my father's side as he was dying of cancer when news of Muhammed's capture hit the tv in his hospital room. My dad, an ex cop, actually sat up, grabbed the remote to turn up the tv, smiled, then laid back down again. Once a cop, always a cop.

It still brings chills remembering that.

I was freaked out living in Calgary that the possibility of copycaters was out there. Sick individual...

And I echo the statements about death penality. It shouldn't be used, execpt on this guy... and death by sniper... put him out in an enclosed area. Tell him he's going to be shot... and let him just sit there, in fear. Then shoot the jerkface (CP would let me call him what I wanted to call him).

I believe that Utah is the only state that still allows the selection of death by firing squad.

The real question though, is what channel is being broadcast on?

An execution on Live TV, now thats a ratings Bonanza!!

I have no issue with the Death Penalty here. In fact this is a text book example of where to use it, if ever.

When I read this the first thing I thought of was the newsreel clip from Starship Troopers about the captured murderer:

A murderer was caught today, and found guilty this afternoon. Execution live tonight, all channels all nets.

I have no problem with the actual death penalty in theory. I think killing some people perfectly fine. My personal opposition to it stems from how places that have it don't seem to apply it fairly and evenly. It's just not worth it to execute one innocent person imo. Not to mention how some terrible people get spared and some less threatening ones get it.

One can argue that in cases where there is no doubt of the person's guilt that it should be used, but technically speaking, that was probably thought to be the case even when some innocent people have been convicted or executed.

So yeah... not sad to see this guy go, but still opposed to the death penalty (more logistical than moral opposition though).

Any chance Obama gives him a stay of execution?

If you want to see political suicide in action he would give a stay. As it stands right now there's no logical reason for one, I think the appeals have pretty much run their course.

And does the president get involved in executions, or is that up to the state governers office?

I seem to recall one of the last things Bill Clinton did as he was leaving office was grant some stays of execution. Maybe I'm dreaming.

But I guess that's why he waited until then... it would have been political suicide.

i thin the punishment should fit the crime..so i think they should let him loose in some huge nature reserve somewhere..with snipers everywhere..and let him run for his life..not knowing when or who is going to shoot him

Don't recall him issuing stays of executions, however Bill's signing hand must have been sore

Old George was pretty busy on his last day, its amazing to see how many drug crimes he pardoned

Sad to see people on here cheerleading state sponsored murder. Who are we to decide who lives or dies? Yes this man is almost certainly guilty of terrible crimes but I don't think we as a society should decide who lives and who dies.

Remember, it costs much more in legal fees to execute someone than it does to keep them imprisoned for life at the taxpayer's expense. Often times, these executions are done for little more than political gain come election time. I realize we are a full year away from mid-term elections in the USA, but just watch and see the rate of executions increase come mid-October 2010.

They should auction off who gets to administer the needle and donate it to the affected families.
