good thing you didn't buy the Ford, that 6.0L had the worst headgasket problems after 150k...not to mention that new mess of a motor, the 6.4L, wow, great idea that was!
looking forward to seeing the new 6.7L Ford built engine, however, will it stray me from my duramax....hell no
Ford has lost a lot of buisness in the "work truck" market, which has been picked up by GM, we'll see if they get it back

I did my part by buying an 09 mustang GT.
The only reason GM may have possibly picked up any ground (I'd like to see numbers to back this up as very few mining companies use GM trucks) in the work truck market is because they were practically giving the trucks away.

I own a 2005 Escape. Best vehicle i've ever owned. Will buy another one when it's time to trade this one in.

I owned 2 Ford Explorers, 1991 and 1994 models, excellent vehicles, kept each almost 10 years and had no work done to them except standard maintenance like oil changes, a new set of tires and I think maybe brakes. Never even had to change the battery on either one.
We are on our second Ford truck, both diesels. First was a 1984 F250 series, we kept it for 11 years, the person who bought it is still using it. It did have some minor problem with the glow plugs, but Ford had some kind of recall and replaced them.
We now have a 1995 F250 diesel, the 7.2 power (super?) stroke or whatever it is called. Another excellent vehicle, pulls 4 horses in a trailer in the mountains, no problem whatsoever. It has manual hubs as did the the 1984 truck. The 1995 model has different glow plugs than the 1984 model and they have never been a problem.
With both trucks, just the normal oil changes and maintenance have been required.
People always approach us wanting to buy the 1995 model. It gets excellent mileage compared to the new trucks and the engine in it is great. No way will we sell, it only has 75000 km on it.

Plus they're bloody loud. Not as bad as the old Dodge Cummins but holy smokes do they howl when you're heading down the highway.
I think it's pretty hit and miss in regards to how finicky the injectors in those International's are. Our newer (2003 I think) semi had a couple injectors go on it after we bought it, but the late 90's one we've got hasn't had anything like that happen to it.

What is it about Ford that kept their heads above water versus GM and Chrystler? Its not like GM and Chrystler were having trouble selling cars. It has to be in the operations costs, Ford was doing something different than the other 2 counterparts that failed. I thought I had read somewhere Ford had shifted major/pricey operations overseas a while ago, but I'm not sure if it was exactly that.

just to throw water on good news.
Also judging from the comments, UAW is going to be bending them over during negotiations.

If Ford wants to competitive and enter this new market, they arn't going to be able to dodge these sort of things on future financial statements and quarterly reports.

don't know about mining and do not know exact numbers, just looking at trends in the patch, most guys who run their own trucks have switched to GM and most service companies which provide company vehicles 1 ton and 3/4 ton have as well

fixed...and that 7.3L is a monster, very well built IMO...very shocking to hear of a '95 diesel with 75k clicks on it, I think I put 80k plus in one year on my truck, both personal and work...crazy! hold onto to that gem!
it's nice to hear of the old trucks still kickin it, without all the emissions BS they have now

I think it has to do with commercial contracts, I could be out to lunch but I think it does contribute quite a bit to the overall profit margin...
- law enforcement services
- EMS/Fire services
- oilfield
- city vehicles
just an assumption from what I have noticed over the years

Man they must have short memories, and incredibly bad vision.

They started reorganization along time ago when they hired away a top Manager at Boeing to be their CEO. They have been been in the rebuild mode for along time compared to GM and Dodge who turned a blind eye to it and are now unfortunately propped up by Jon Q taxpayer.

I'm totally dreaming of buying this Escape sometime. 2010's start in the $18k range around here, which is almost doable for a poor guy like me.

We have a 2004 Escape that we use as the hockey car. It has 95,000 miles and we've never had a problem. I figure we'll drive it until it dies, which looks like its a long way off. Its the perfect size to be able to haul my kids gear and have enough room for him in the back, but small enough to fit in normal parking spaces and get decent gas mileage.

its good to see at least one of the big 3 staving off death, but they are still trailing the Japanese and arguably Koreans in quality, IMO. Just seems like they're always 4-5 years behind the curve.

My next car will probably be a Fusion. I haven't owned a Ford for over 20 years, but the Fusion really interests me. I've been driving Chryslers lately, but they have their heads up their whazoos anymore. Time to move on again. I've gone through Ford, GM, Mazda and Chrysler phases. I was going to move on to Toyota or Hyundai next, but Ford has changed my mind.
