Voted Rock too, before reading this. This election has been terribly campaigned. There were lots of candidate posters around, which said absolutely nothing of value, and an article in the Gauntlet, and those were ALL I had to go on. I walked past a debate or something already in progress in Mac Hall on my way somewhere once, which I had no idea was happening...didn't see anything advertising it. Therefore, I voted for the people I knew (and knew would do a good job), and put no vote for the rest. Except the Rock, because I thought it was funny and wasn't impressed by ANY campaigns. One guy did actually come to my door in rez to remind me about the election and talk about his goals, only I had already voted - missed the buck there, buddy...would've gotten points for being the only person who reached out...only he was too late.

Where in rez do you live? I'm on the second floor of Cascade.
I vote Rock... but seriously I am really sick and tired of SU elections. Half the cantidates are pompous jackasses who feel as though they are better than the general student body. The one that I can think of is this Teale guy who I have heard, it honestly sounded like he was talking down to me, and as a result I wouldn't trust him at all. Smart guy but I know him, and he is a jackass.... only way I can describe him.
|
Lol, I know Teale reasonably well. You're correct, he will tend to talk down to people, and he's also very smart. Probably a little young to be in the SU though... fresh out of high school and _very_ wet behind the ears.... politically... even for the SU

Teale isn't that smart. You can tell he was smart in high school, but he has way too much naive knowledge. He gets shut down in Slezak's routinely.

Honestly, I'd read your platform, but I'd be willing to guess it's more of he same that I heard from every SU candidate I ever saw (lower tuition, get higher on the McLean's ranking, blah blah blah).
|
Shantz, I'm not running in these elections. Never have, never will.
My point is, if anyone is willing to vote for The Rock in this election, then it's either a form of protest or an ironic twist of student apathy.
I agree they are limited in what they can do as a functioning body, but I would place some blame on an apathetic student body in general. Lobbying is a proven, powerful form of political influence, but we just don't have the numbers at the U of C to justify any large-scale movement of sorts.
My bad, I got you confused with Thunderball for some reason, and you make a valid point. But you can't seriously tell me that the reason tuition has gone up the maximum is because enough students aren't telling the admin that they don't want their tution going up. The tuition going up is a matter or economics, and there is nothing the SU can do about it. Vote or don't vote for whoever you like, the result will be the same. More of the same.

Actually, I completely agree with you, and for the record I didn't promise to lower tuition.
My platform centred around a Governmental Affairs Committee, like the U of A Senate has, merely to keep a cordial line of communication thats less partisan... I think tuition is inevitable, and there is absolutely nothing anyone in the SU can do to stop it. That's most of why the Gauntlet felt the need to attack my candidacy.

I see the gauntlet still a bunch of naive *******? University is supposed to be the place on earth with the 'free-est thought' and SU's and gauntlet's are the opposite.
|
I couldn't agree more.
I can tell you from one term in office, and possibly a second... we'll see what tomorrow brings... both the Gauntlet and SU are a couple of Good Ol' Boys (and Girls) club. They stick to their own, attack who is a threat, and appeal to the lowest common denominator of Students....

Well, if getting shut down in some guy's class is an accurate measure of one's intelligence, then I guess he's not as smart as I thought. There's a whole lot of different kinds of smarts, and most of them (imo) take a little time for you to get smooth and experienced enough to realize that you have 'smarts', and the tricky task of applying said smarts. I know him well enough to know that he's a lot like i was, all brains and no seasoning = one big mouth and a lot of lost debates.
I think he'll do fine, if he pulls the stick out of ass.

I don't know the guy as a friend or anything, but just through mutual friends and even during a conversation at a bar he has to be the center of attention where everything revolves around him. What I really remember though was in grade 12? debate when I was judging a match or whatever they are called and he showed up in a cow suit. Right there I made my mind up about what type of guy he was, and likely still is after seeing the way in which he carries himself. In fact I think I judged him for that round and just due because of that choice of attire I sided with his opponents. He went out with a direct goal of taking attention and by proxy all but insulting the other team. He is a bunch of flash and style, but I really question how smart he is there.... it doesn't suprise me that he could be smart in a high school context, but would fail later. I also voted for Prang because I think he looks like fonzie.... hell same shinguard different pile anyways.

Wow you guys sure are attacking this guy. Personally I don't think it's all that bad. Sure, it may be that he's more of a grade 12 "smarts" type guy, but that could all change.
I play hockey with him sometimes, and I think he's a nice dude. Nowhere do I get the whole "centre of attention" thing. I mean, all of these people who are running for various positions are looking to be the centre of attention. If they didn't want attention, they wouldn't be running. I'm not saying that it's his/their goal, but I think that getting some attention helps spread your opinions etc., regardless of how these opinions are perceived...
But who the hell am I to talk! I don't care nearly enough to vote for anyone...
Wow, that was strange. I lost my student apathy for a minute. No need to panic, however, it's back.

Normally I don't care about the SU Elections at all and wont vote. However, I don't mind voting for people I 'know' if I can. By that I mean maybe they are friends with one of my friends, they seem like a decent person in class when they stand up to plug themselves (if they are one of those dorks that feels the need to raise their hand and give their 2 cents every chance they get, then NO. If they make a funny speech, then YES!) or if they happen to post on CP that they are running. Unfortunately, I may caught this thread too late so I will try and vote tommorow if I can still vote around 11ish.
As far as my vote for SU is concerned i'm gonna have to go with rock on this one. Scissors and Paper just don't do it for me, they both seem so cut and paste (yuk yuk yuk.... i'm so very very sorry :boh .
Good old rock, nothin beats that...

I spoiled all my ballots other than voted for Sign Guy and Paige Forsyth, I love Sign Guy's signs, they're always good for a laugh, and Paige went around ICT this afternoon to campaign so being the only face I could associate with the names I voted for her. I also voted no on the Dino funding, those jocks can fund their own teams if they want to play, dont ask the student population for a hand out just because Kinesiology no longer wants your financial baggages. :mad2:
The only way I'll take SU elections seriously is if they somehow get the rights to run the parking services and DRASTICALLY reduce parking cost AND axe the damn U-PASS :mad2: Whoever can accomplish that before I graduate gets my vote for sure!
Oh yeah and one last word, I'm sick of all y'all SU shinguardheads and your all expense paid retreats funded by our union dues, so lick my balls

Here's a little inside information on that deplorable Team fee...
Kinesiology already tried to cut a ton of teams, and that budget was outright refused.
So even if it loses, the University won't lose any teams. Its a money grab so kinese doesn't have to do any cuts, and potentially have extra money.

There's another election going on now until Thursday. I was waiting for someone else to start a topic on this, but I guess I have to.
Input is very important if people want a student government that represents them well.
As some of you know, my name is Matt Trotta and I am an incumbent Senator at the University and I am running for re-election. Any support you guys at CP can give me is great and deeply appreciated.
I probably shouldn't be posting all this here, but I could really use the support.
If anyone is curious about my platform, feel free to ask and I'll post it.

Done and done. Voted for only you and the rock, i'm sure you'll make a great team.
Good luck, hope you win...

I voted for Fadi Gurguis. I voted for Bryan West last year to beat out that Barski guy but he's got ties to the Liberal party so I didn't vote for him because of that. Also Fadi is a good guy who will take the job seriously. He completely took over the economics club and worked really hard at making it better.
I also voted for Matt Trotta because of this post, go Trotta.
As far as my criteria for the other positions, I generally voted for people who looked the least annoying/cocky/arrogant in their pictures. All the guys with the stupid horn rimmed glasses were automatically weeded out, as well as the keener/nerdy types.

Oops, I was thinking of this other guy, Nathan (Natan?)
Yeah, Teale probably needs MORE stick up his ass. The guy seems to think he can get by on half a brain and wacky clothes. He needs to ditch the 'kitchyness' and start embracing the fact that he's a long way from knowing everything there is to know about Pol/Sci. Decent guy, but far too wacky to currently be taken seriously.
Incidentally, both Natan and Teale are on the U of C Model UN Team I believe, I recall as I used to be (ahem) President. President of the Nerd Club... at least I got some free trips out of it!
