So terrible. I have often wondered how that originated. I just don't see how the premise and the conclusion are related.

Well it's in reference to people who put their mouths too far over the joint, rather than just touching it to their lips and taking it in. Which of course, has nothing to do with having big lips, but I guess it was just a running joke.
