The last time I worked for someone that wasn't me or my family, I was allowed to use my sick days for personal reasons. With discretion, of course. But basically, if the need arose where I really had to have a weekday off for personal stuff, I'd just ask my boss if I could "call in sick" the next day. He was cool.

Today was a good example of my boss. We've got a few feet of snow, one lady I work with can't make it in. She calls him, says "I'm going to work from home today". His answer? "Nope, I can make it in so can you." He made her take a vacation day instead of letting her work from home. I'd have lost my mind, I'm interested to see how she is tomorrow.

I have no problem with that - as long as the employee is being up front.

That was the beauty of it... All I had to do was tell the truth (I'm a terrible liar, anyway). And since I rarely get/got actually sick, I had tons of sick time banked, so he was cool. Convo would sound like this:
me: Eh, Greg... *cough* I, uh... It's my buddy's bday tonight. I think I feel an illness coming on. What's tomorrow look like?
Greg: If anything super important comes up, please answer your phone.

You get paid to do a job, not to put in the hours.

Jesus H Christ, 18 paid sick days? That is insane to me. I get 0 paid sick days, and to be honest, I don't want to take time off work. Actual days I take for being sick per year: maybe 1. If someone actually requires 18 sick days, there is something seriously wrong with them.

I kind of wish my employer handled sick days differently because I don't call in sick as often as some others I notice.

I have not taken 1 single sick day in my 4 years in the current job. I'm starting to feel like Bruce Willis in Unbreakable.
Or it could be that i'm paid by hour

Exactly. If I'm efficient and can do all my work well in, say, 6.5 hours a day, do I really need to put in hours of wasted face time at work just to comply? I think if you get things done well, you should have more freedom in terms of hours. I hate office politics and all its related bull.

I think it depends how sick you are. If I'm not feeling well, I'll go home and work since that way I'm not going to get others sick. This doesn't mean that I'm bedridden. If I was, I would indicate as much.

My department was told yesterday that if you have anyone sick in your household to work from home until all symptoms are gone.
I'm salaried, so work from home or sick days off entirely are still paid (mind you, I also end up taking care of issues from home on weekends and evenings, so I still think I'm getting the short end of the stick). As long as my work gets done then there is no problem, but I have seen people let go for too many sick days (really, you should realize that if you are averaging over a sick day a week from the moment you start the job that the employer may have a gripe).

Why not ask your employer for an expansion in duties and responsibilities?

Not popular but I have no problem with what the boss did personally.
Its a snow day - leave early - buy a vehicle suited for the weather - live closer to work - its not the jobs problem that is snowed out IMO.

I work hourly... 7ish per day.
I get 500 hrs of 100% pay sick per year, but it has to be proven with a doctor's note. I also get 10 or 12 "casual" sick days per year, plus 15 vacation days...
All this is to start, as I've only been there 2 months.

I agree. People will look for any way out of work. If you really hate your job that much, quit. This really has become "generation me". Some people won't touch OT with a 10 meter cattle prod. A lot take advantage of the system and a lot are just plain dishonest.

I've been at home with the flu since Tuesday and my Blackberry and laptop have nary left my bedside. I'm either too dedicated or too stupid to know better.

It's more designed specially for the flu, or for a long term sickness, so that people don't feel bad when they are legitimately sick.
You need a doctor's note specifying exactly which days and for how long you'll be sick, and it's very very strict, to avoid people from abusing.

I agree, it is insane. Not only that, but we can accumulate 6 months worth. We also start witht 4 weeks paid holidays. The benefits of being in a union in B.C.
The good thing about the sick days is a co-worker broke her leg a while back and was off 3 months. She had accumulated her maximum amount of sick days so she didn't have to worry about a paycheque.
