No, not really, at least for UofC

What I am assuming he is referring to is places that removed it after getting mass sign ups.

Just as a note I went through the upgrade yesterday, its pretty straight forward. The one issue I did run into was a failure of my AVG internet security suite. However there is a fix online where you have to run a cleanup and reinstall.

Everyone should at least try the upgrade - if you are planning on doing a wipe and install, try the upgrade anyways. You might be pleasantly suprised. One of the reasons that 7 had such a large beta test was because the upgrade process was tested and evaluated quite extensively (seeing as 7 had to work as an upgrade for a LOT of disgruntled Vista users).

FYI, if you have the time and patience, do the wipe and clean install - forget the upgrade.

Anybody install this on a SSD harddrive?

Just wondering if that TRIM command shows up in the OS.

I think that's old advice. One of the positives of Windows 7 is that it handles upgrading much better than previous versions. For once, upgrading instead of wiping is actually a valid option. Except for the WinXP crowd, I guess. (I don't really know the whole story on that.)

The reason its a valid approach nowadays is that it doesn't just dump itself on top of the existing Vista install during an upgrade. It actually does a fresh install, then migrates over the app portions of the registry and the user profiles. There's no real magic to migrating user profiles.

Even the app migration stuff is super easy now, because Vista, Server 2008, and 7 all utilize the SxS technology to keep app specific and version dependent copies of DLL's and other files in place correctly.

Nice. It's about time, really.

Oh knock it off.

I have 15 years in the IT field supporting/building/managing corporate Windows-based networks/desktops/software/etc. I think I'm perfectly capable of commenting on a Windows install process. How about you? Was anything I said inaccurate?

I just tried to download and install the upgrade.

Setup.exe crashed 9 seconds in. Great start for the guys from Seattle.

also if you want to go from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit windows 7, you need to do a clean install.

Yeah, 32 to 64 will always require a clean install with any OS.

They're probably illegally reselling student keys or something.

So I installed the upgrade 64 bit version last night. It was easy and even chose my new hard drive as first choice to install it to and recognized my vista install for legitimizing my upgrade, so now I have a dual boot configuration. I was first worried that I couldn't do a 64 bit install on the 32 bit OS and than I worried that I'd have to go to some lengths like installing Vista on the new hard drive first. Very smooth.
