Not sure what your tech level is (so this will be a simplified answer), but it has the look and feel of Vista with a lot of the issues people had with Vista straightened out. I think it could have been released as a Vista service pack, but with all the negative that was out with Vista it's a lot better to call it a new OS than to just release a SP.
Myself, I'm not one to jump on new software, and I hate Vista. But I will be installing 7 pretty quick on my home PCs that can handle it.

It's an updated UI pinned on top of a cleaned up and optimized Vista kernel, basically.

I've run 64bit for over a year, love it.
Those programs that do take advantage of it, run better.
Tell him to get with the times. Microsoft is already talking
about moving to 128 bit support for Windows 8.

Pretty much right, 97 execution threads for Vista as apposed to 100 for
Windows7. But the rewrites are what make the difference.

Yeah, after I asked the question I googled it. Seems decent enough, I hate Vista, which is fine because I use XP still, but this new one looks great. Might considering moving on from XP to Windows 7.

OK...The good news: I am now running Windows 7 Ultimate!
The bad news: It's the 32 bit version. My dad was afraid to make the change, despite my lobbying and reason. Whatever.
I am really impressed with Windows 7 for hour I have been using it. I did a clean install, and it took about forty minutes, including repartitioning the hard drive. No funky error messages or anything. All my hardware works great, and all the software including Norton AntiVirus runs well. The installation was smooth as butter! I had my Vista sized bottle of Tylonol at the ready, but I did not need it!
Boot time is lighting quick (seconds), but that's a given going from a bloated computer to a clean install.
As for the improvements of Windows 7 I have messed around with, I most like some of the simplelest! Being able to add icons to the toolbar keeps my desktop nice and tidy. Also, Aero Peek and Aero Shake are really handy with tons of windows open. I also noticed the new Windows Media Center is slick!
Overall, I am quite happy! I think it is quite a worthwhile upgrade from Vista.

Can I have one of your Windows 7 napkins?
I've been running 7 for almost 2 months now at work and its great. No problems what so ever. (Except a very borked up Office 2010 DP install but that was my fault.) I LOVE the new task bar. I've got all my current work files pinned to pinned task bar application shortcuts and am much more efficient. The Windows task bar FAR exceeds the OS X dock. Maybe now, Apple will take the Finder and Dock seriously.

Hopefully my disks from my pre-order arrive tomorrow.
Were all the "House Party" packs the same? I'm disappointed I missed out on that.

I got an email a couple months back about it and signed up, while I was away on my honeymoon I got a email saying I was a finalist and to setup my party site, first people to do it would be choosen. Well I thought I was screwed because I couldn't do it on my blackberry and didn't want to search for a cafe on my honeymoon. I got back 3 days later and did it just to see what happened and got an email back right away saying I was a host.
All in All its a pretty sweet deal just having people over to check out the new OS for a free copy of ultimate.
Edit: Also received a secondary email from them last week giving me a free copy of Norton Internet Security 2010.

Why the heck would they do that? They already have a firewall and they just released their own anti-virus a few weeks ago.

Good question. It could have been given away through the party website we signed up on and not through microsoft directly. They were also offering some corel software at 75% at the sametime.

Ugh for some reason my boot time for Window 7 is around 2-3 minutes literally. I did a clean install and installed all the necessary drivers / programs on it but its taking so damn long to load up the computer.

I don't think that's terribly unusual. These newer operating systems prefer to be put to 'sleep' rather than be turned off. I've been running Win 7 since July and I rarely shutdown the computer. In fact, only time I did was when I went on holidays. Just put it in sleep mode. Wake up from sleep is insanely fast.
