Your dealer will tell you that if you don't have them, your car will explode and your baby will be eaten by cannibals. Also, there'll be a nominal fee to reset the sensors, and by nominal I mean ass-rape.

I'll talk with the mechanic tomorrow, but can these sensors just be removed? Any reason why not? Any idea what it costs or how much time is involved?

Well, I'm really pissed with Toyota. I'm a huge fan of the cars and have bought several new Toyotas (about five new Camrys and this Rav, plus some used Toyotas) but this may cause me to switch to Honda. I've found out that if I don't put these sensors on my winter tires, the sensor light comes on and says on on my dashboard. There is no way to disconnect it. I can put the sensors on my winter tires but every time I change tires they must be reprogrammed, at a cost of about $100 each time (one hour of shop time required). A Toyota dealer tells me that they don't believe that anyone but Toyota can program these sensors. On top of that, my wife says she wants the sensor because she doesn't want to be checking tire pressure and doesn't want the light on all the time. All this nonsense when I could just check the tire pressure myself as needed. My Rav is going in today and I'm not pleased with this crap so may give them a piece of my mind. I've spent a lot of money on Toyotas over the years but I may just have bought my last one. I'm so pissed.

I have no idea how much the tool costs but check this website.

I bought my reseting tool on ebay for $25, for a Ford focus.

Yeah... It's the same with Honda too.

TPMS is overrated. The sensor only comes on if your tires are really, really deflated - like 10psi under.

Honda's implementation sucks, BTW.

I used to have a 2006 Pontiac Vibe (same as the Toyota Matrix) with the tire pressure sensor and swapped my all season tires for winter ones with no problems.

If you used the same rims you wouldn't have a problem.

Okay, update time. I just picked up my Rav4 and there are no sensors (unless they were installed by mistake because I asked for them not to be installed and I didn't pay for them), but the dashboard warning light is not on. I drove the vehicle for 30 minutes afterward and no sensor came on. I can't explain it because I was told by several people that the light would remain lit without the sensors. I'm happy about it.
