stick time....hahah anyone watch "RENO 911!"?
yup, never heard of it.
on another note I played shinny at the ICE DEN in PHX this year, I think half were Canadians and the other half were northern US guys re-located...quite amusing, good game too, really fast, quick shifts, nice to play on the same ice that the Coyotes practice on, short boards.
was weird coming out to the truck after in plus 30 degree sunshine though

God knows Jayems could use that.

A while ago when I was still learning how to skate and everything I joined a pretty chill shinny game. It was chill until this Byfuglien wannabe that thought he was in the NHL came and absolutely crushed me. I saw him coming a mile away but I couldn't move fast enough or position myself to avoid the check. My God I was seeing stars and was winded for a while. That guy was a big dick and everyone was shocked.
It's simple, if you see a guy who can't really skate properly, give him some time and space for Christ sake. And it's shinny, who the hell tries to run someone over.
Now that I'm somewhat decent, it's a lot more enjoyable and we try to be friendly to the beginners. Unless those beginners hold onto the puck and think they're Ovechkin, then you can show them a thing or two.

Great to hear that it actually goes on somewhere. I bet that our rinks could have an hour set aside if the lawsuit prone people to the south can handle it.

Has nothing to do with being "too cool". Fact is, there's not enough ice time to go around, so they have to set aside some time for public skating only. If they allowed sticks and pucks, you'd turn people off from leisure skating because they'd get run out of the place by all the hockey players wanting some ice. Heck, my mens league has games that start at 11:30pm on weeknights!
When I lived in the States, I knew a lot of people who enjoyed skating, but most have never played hockey. Here, if you skate, most likely you've played. Go to any of the outdoor rinks - there's usually a hockey rink, and one for regular skating, because there is no way in hell that if given some ice, and the freedom to bring sticks and pucks, that a hockey game won't break out.
If we had stick & puck times similar to the ones you describe, where you have to bring a kid, guess what? That kid is likely going to start the shinny game. Here, it's skating, or hockey. There is no in between.

There is not enough ice time here either. Between 4-5 in the afternoon on weekdays is the only stick and puck time, and it's not all year.
11:30 is nothing. We've had games start at 1AM. I think you might be shocked if you saw how much ice time is in demand here. They had to open several off-ice practice facilities while other rinks are being built. People spend more time at the rink either playing or watching their kids play than they do at Panthers games, that's for sure. I wouldn't judge our area's interest in hockey by Cats' attendance numbers.
Plus while I was kidding about the "too cool" thing...uh.....
The gym I belong to is full of transplanted Canadians, and so is the local rink. And yeah most of them from Ontario and Quebec. And at least half of those are far under retirement age!
At the rinks in LW we have 2 nights for public skating on one rink. That ends at 9. It's all hockey on the other rink, after 9 it's hockey on both. Figure skating takes up the early mornings on one rink.
It's okay if a kid starts alittle shinny...they just don't want some 275 pound guy to bulldoze those who are maybe less skilled.

^ I understand that you were joking. I was just indicating that hockey is too popular here to have stick & puck mixed in with casual skating. It's just not a good idea here, where a large % of people who skate can also pick up a stick and play hockey. You would never have public skating.
You should look into another league if you're starting at 1am. I used to play in one like that, but changed over so now I get primetime 11:30 starts. lol

Aaargh. That's why it's "stick and puck " time , and then "no stick or puck" time. Most of the people who play are at work between 4-5. We can't help that you guys just can't keep your hands off your sticks and pucks!!! Addicts!!!
Seriuosy though it's a good gimmick for the rink to get a few bucks during the downtime. Afternoon public skating ends at 4.

Ah, ok. Sorry, I think I misunderstood. I was under the impression that you could bring out a stick and puck during public skating as long as you had a kid with you. I guess I missed the part where there is a separate time for "no sticks/pucks".

Trico Centre in the South. Mostly during non peak days and times during the week though. Check the arena schedule on their website. There should be public skating, shinny as well as stick + puck time slots.

I was looking for the same thing and came across this:
http://www.calgary.ca/CSPS/Recreatio...-schedule.aspx
Pucks and sticks are not allowed during public skates, but there are multiple shinny times and types based on what you are looking for.

It may depend on the facility and the time but some places have multiple rinks set aside for pick up games but only enough players show up for one game. A few guys would use the other rink for shooting practice, running drills, etc.

We're not though, it's seriously just Alberta. In lower mainland B.C. there were multiple stick and puck times each week at almost every arena, and that's not a place where it's tough to fill a game of shinny either.
I really think the reason they don't do it here is because they figure everyone can just use the outdoor rinks, which is pretty stupid. Really, how hard is it to find two hours a week of ice time to use for what is essentially a public skate with a hockey stick?
I've been bothered by the absence of this concept ever since I moved here. All there is is drop-in shinny. Sometimes you don't want to play a game.

Get a few friends together and rent some ice (preferably in non primetime hours). We used to do this all the time when I was younger. Everybody chip in $10-$20 for an hour and its no big deal.

Or during the spring or summer. No minor hockey to compete with.

You could try this:
http://www.kijiji.ca/v-activities-gr...ationFlag=true
If the link disappears, just search 'beginner hockey' in the community section of Kijiji.
The organizer's name is Andrew - I skated with his groups for a handful of times before joining a team. It was really good for learning how to transition from pond hockey to league play.

Celebrated Square Root Day
|
I don't if it's still this way, but a few years ago you could usually phone Fish Creek arena and get dirt cheap times during the day, Monday to Friday if you can take time off work.
I know a couple of times I phoned, asked what was available for cheap and it was almost like going to a pawn shop.
"What do you have for cheap?"
"Well, we have a few times scattered throughout the week that aren't selling, I'll give you one of those for $60 for 1hr and 15mins."
"I'll take it".
