I was surprised to find the best pricing through the dealership, too. In my case it was through T&T Honda for a current model Civic.
In generaly, size of tire make a huge difference in price. 14" is approx. $400 for the rubber. 17" will set you back almost $900.
Comparison shop online. 1010tires.com is Canadian and has free shipping currently. Tirerack.com will price out shipping, duty, and taxes for you when you checkout. Prices are in USD, though, so daily exchange rate fluctuations do make a difference. If you're just getting tires without the rim, make sure you add in price to mount (~$100 for 4?).
Kal-tire is usually pretty good product (Nokian) and service, but expensive.
Though, I've never used them, I have only heard good things about Urban Expressions. According to beyond.com there is an extra discount for members. The manager/owner is a poster there. They have competitive pricing on Kumho, Hankook, and Michelin's.

Sadly, that was my intent of the other thread. But there's always a few all-seasoners in the crowd who feel they need to make their voice heard.
As for where to get them... make sure you shop around. I did quite a bit of research into mine and after I factored in balancing, install, tire tax for disposal (and maybe shipping), the online deals came really close to the local shop pricing. At most I would have saved $50, and the relationship with a local shop is worth that much.

Make sure you're getting the Michelin X-Ice Xi2 - the 2nd generation of the tires. Most of the old non Xi2 stock should be out of inventory, but make sure someone's not trying to sell old stock.

give Sammy a call down at Mister Detail (far southend of calgary). Is a detail shop as the name suggests, but Sammy has great prices on tires and/or rims/tire combo's.

As promised an update on Urban Expressions. Phoned them the day of the first snowstorm. Was in the next day with my truck and a couple of days later with the car. Good friendly service and a good price. Both vehicles now fitted with Kumho Winter tires.

All I can get

I got a decent deal on a set of Michelin Alpins mounted on rims through my dealership (Honda West). Previous cars of mine had Bridgestone Blizzaks.

Can someone please answer this for me - is putting winter tires on my current rims the end of the world?
Every dealership/tire place tells me to get new rims/wheels for my winter tires because they'll reduce the lifespan of my rims.
On the other hand, all of my friends tell me that they just put their tires on their regular rims and have no problems at all.
Help!

Putting them on your regular rims is fine. It might reduce their lifespan from way way past the time you'll own that car to just way past the time you'll own that car.

Rims are a non-wearing part. I fail to see how putting winter tires on them reduces their lifespan. Besides factory wheels are usually dime a dozen.

People who sell wheels use the arguement the salt used in the winter will deteriorate your wheels. If you wash that off during a Chinook it's not a concern.

There's no sodium chloride used on Calgary streets.

They use calcium chloride instead. Chances are your car will rust away years before your wheels.

So what are they using then?
Quote:
The city said 70 of its vehicles were applying salt as well as a sand-salt mixture for better traction on major Calgary roads in the morning, but by afternoon, the full fleet had been dispatched.

Edit: From the City of Calgary website:
Quote:
The City believes in using the right amount of salt or sanding product in the right place and at the right time.
* The use of sand or salt is dependent on road surface temperatures and weather conditions.
* When road surface temperatures are between 0 and -5 degrees C, salt is used to melt accumulated snow and ice.
* For road surface temperatures below -5 degrees C, a sanding chip mixture (4% salt, 96% fine gravel) is used.
|
Quote:
Road salts include sodium chloride (NaCl), calcium chloride (CaCl2), potassium chloride (KCl) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2). The City of Calgary only uses sodium chloride and calcium chloride. Roads salts used for snow and ice control may be solid or liquid brines.

Never used to, but they have been for many years now.
The City’s snow and ice control program determines how roadways and
sidewalks are maintained and includes the following services:
Removal of snow and ice from roadways, bike lanes, sidewalks and
stairways using a combination of sanding and salting, plowing, and
snow removal

That "salt" is potassium based.
Whoops, looks like they started using sodium chloride.
Poo poo heads.
