These seem like more in depth, and there fore better, versions of Risk.
I like it.
I jsut meant if there is a certain mechanic in the game you like, then I could reccomend a war type game that might suit you.
Memoir and Tide of Iron are 2 player games unless you daisy chain Memoir.

I'm sure I've played Diplomacy at least 2 dozen times... I'd never play again unless every player didn't know each other. Very, very aggravating game to play unless everyone is a stranger... to much possibility for outside-game collusion to fix the results.
Oh wow I may check this out one night even though I would surely be a "Newb" But if anyones down I will conquer them In Payday I am the champion of the world

We are a very 'newb' friendly group. We even have a couple seniors who showed up thinking that we would be playing bridge, but who now come to play euro's every month.
Most of us are between 25 - 40.
Every month I teach a couple games to the people who are new to this style of playing.
I haven't kept up on the new board games, always liked A&A but now interested in this company that makes Memoir and Ticket to Ride. Discovery Hut has them but $70? Ouch.

My neighbour, one of the guys who comes out every month to play, is a dealer. His prices are cheaper than anywhere you can find in-store or online.
PM me if you (or anyone else) would like his contact information.
Diplomacy may be the greatest board game ever created. Did anyone take Strategic Studies at the UofC with Huebert? That final game of Diplomacy got so intense that I actually ruined a few casual friendships over it.
Really?? That seems strange to me... at least when no one knows each other everyone starts with a clean slate. I've seen many, MANY diplomacy games won by 2-3 guys who colluded on a personal rather than game-level to win. I went to one place once where these 2 roommates were hosting the game, and they just stuck with each other throughout and dominated, because that was the pre-conceived plan. Happens alll the time with diplomacy, I hate it.
Just an update that we will be playing again this upcoming Friday night (November 6th) from 6 - 9 p.m.
Our location is the McKenzie Towne Hall (on the N side of the traffic circle). Everyone is welcome, but the Hall will charge a $2/person drop-in fee to those who are not paid-up residents.
Has anyone tried Catan: Traders and Barbarians? My wife and I like to play two-player games at home, but so far we haven't found any version of Catan that really works well for two people. I'm wondering if this version is any good.

For the price of the T&B Expansion, you can probably get a game that will play better for two. That being said, I haven't played it, let alone with two.
Maybe try Pandemic with a ghost hand. It is cooperative, whereby the two of you will be trying to win together rather that beating each other. It also will play in less than an hour, with simpler setup than Catan. For a competitive match for two, we usually play carcassonne, but granted, two isn't its ideal configuration.
