Also, re Tokyo's bid. The IOC looks at regions of the world when determining the next selection for an Olympics. They like to move it around - ie. North America, Europe, Asia, etc...
Beijing's 2008 Olympics probably made it difficult for Tokyo even though they are two completely separate countries, they are in the same "region."

That is very true. I don't know why Tokyo even bothered...

Besides, with everyone boosting the bid (even the president) from Chicago, it doesn't have enough of a national angle to it. The bid never really felt larger than the state of Illinois, while the other bids always felt like national bids.

Angry? I just searched it on you tube because I was curious... He swore a couple times, but that doesn't equal anger as it was while joking around and probably more about nerves... he is not a great public speaker, he paused while reading his speech at the wrong moments and emphasized the wrong words as well as mispronouncing a few.
If anything I'd say Jordan declining to speak was probably because he knew his public speaking was not top notch and was not wanting to rosanne barr it for the world to hear...

You don't live there do you? I'll be in Sao Paulo and maybe still in 2016 so that will be a big time for Brazil. I am happy they got it because despite problems of traffic and crime, events like this and the World Cup are good because they do create some employment but more importantly infrastructure. Governments work on improving public transportation, improving airports, building roads and aspire to make strides against crime. Brazil has been on the upswing for a while and if these things come to fruition it could do wonders for an already great country.

There are a few of those but I would like to know what you were looking at the tranny cabana boys when there are literally dozens of ridiculously hot women on any beach in Brazil at any given time.

Well, not angry in the level of volume, but it was pretty much criticizing and cutting down everyone he was ever involved with or who had ever helped him. Probably the least gracious induction speech I've ever seen.

Isnt 2012 in London?
Distance from London to Madrid is 1/2 the distance from Tokyo to Beijing.
Glad Rio won, although if anyone has ever been there I cant see how they are going to handle the supposedly crazy amount of people.
Also traffic is already INSANE there.

How many countries can afford to host the summer Olympics? It's probably about the same number that can afford to host the winter games AND have snow.
With the World Cup in 2014 and the summer Olympics in 2016 I think we are watching Brazil's arrival on the world stage.

Should be interesting. Rio is a Southern hemishpere city, but it's more bearable in a month like September than during it's summer. It is a fantastic city, probably my favorite city I've ever visited. But the traffic is brutal, and the people there do drive to kill! I think the most scared I ever was there was walking through one of those monster tunnels even though I was on the side walk with a good sized curb to protect me. I just hope they don't just cover up the Favelas in some attempt to pretend they don't exist and send those people out of town for a couple weeks.

That is a question many asked here. Support for the games was quite low in Tokyo

Agreed (after the fact now of course). First time in South America is kind of a no brainer to me if the logistics are good.

So does Rio hosting the World Cup two years prior make this easier logistically or harder for local sponsorship dollars / facility building dollars? I've been thinking about this all day I can't decide if the pro or cons win.
