Puck Daddy addresses the issue today in his blog:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puc...medium=twitter

Quote:

That isn't to say there isn't a closed-minded, homophobic culture in hockey, because there is. Horrific stories like Theo Fleury's molestation as a junior player likely cloud the issue further, as the intolerant all too easily see crimes like molestation as "symptoms" of homosexual behavior, disgusting and misguided as that is.
How do you change that mindset? With bravery and patience.
Bravery, in the hope that, as Bourne suggests, a few gay players decide to come out publicly, suffer the slurs and show the hockey world that a 90-point center is still a 90-point center no matter to whom he comes home to every night. The moment that taboo is broken, there's no going back. It'll just take an extraordinary individual to break it.

Great column from John Buccigross about Brian Burke's son, Brendan.

It chronicles his concerns as a teen playing (and eventually quitting) hockey, as well as his relationships with others after he came out:

You eventually attend Xaverian Brothers High School, a prep school in Westwood, Mass., and make the competitive varsity hockey team as a senior, but choose not to play. You say it is because you don't think you would get enough playing time and you are upset at the coach. But you actually don't play because you don't think you can go another season without someone finding out your secret.
Your hockey career is over...

So, you are startled this past summer when you get a call from Dad saying, "Hey, Toronto Pride is this weekend, you should fly up." So, sure enough, you fly up, and you and Dad go to the Toronto Pride Parade together.
If someone had told you before coming out that your dad, Brian Burke, would be attending a gay pride parade with you, you wouldn't have believed it. You never suspected Dad would disown you or anything like that, but the way he has handled it and the way he talks about it now has, honestly, really moved you. He was a little awkward about it at first. Today, he doesn't even think twice about it.

I would like to think that I could be that open minded.

What a great article.

The comments are pretty telling of how far there is to go before this isn't an issue though. Fortunately the people arguing against his coming out are relying on tired and idiotic arguments. There's always going to be a percentage of bigots out there, hopefully this will open the door to greater awareness and place those people living in the dark into a noticeable minority.
