TELUS wont need to run fiber to peoples homes. With VDSL, you can run fibre to the nodes, and we are going to be able offer people bandwidth of around 50-100 Megabits. That's good stuff.

Why do I find that really, really hard to believe? I can't even get those speeds from the Telus colo without forking over $10K a month.

We're already laying fibre to MDU's and a lot of communities even today, TELUS spends 1.5 billion per year in infrastructure in Alberta and BC upgrading the network

Even if Telus manages to do this by themselves when they can't even pick their noses without caving in their brains, I have my doubts as to whether they'll offer this service at a reasonable price.

TELUS already offers the best pricing on Internet TV and phone as is, I'm not sure why you think that would change

TELUS doesn't do contracts for high speed anymore
And yes, you can get a contract for your TV if you want a free PVR rental, but that's the same with Shaw Direct, Bell, etc

Not to be a dick. But are you guys all trained to say that? Every employee I have talked to has said that.
Perhaps you guys have the 'cheapest' deal, but I don't believe the best deal.

Shaw has no contracts, for anything. Ever.
The thing I really don't like about contracts with a service like this is if the service sucks you have no ability to cancel. A friend signed up for Telus, but just wanted in TV and internet since he uses his cell phone for everything else he needs. They offered him a pretty good deal, in the neighbourhood of 50 bucks a month for both, so against my advice he went with it.
A month later he gets his first bill, about $120 for a single month (total bill was about 150, but some was for a partial month). He called to get it fixed, and they refused to change his bill amount, and instead told him that they would just tack another 'discounted month' on the end of his contract. Also, they neglected to tell him that to get ANY Telus service you must pay for a phone line as well, which was part of what was added.
He says that that isn't what he sign up for, and to just cancel the service. They said fine, there was a $100+ contract cancellation fee, plus the bill they had outstanding which they wouldn't change since he no longer would be considered eligible for the promotion, so they wanted about $250 to cancel his service.
Needless to say, he decided to keep it after they decided to waive the phone fees for 1 year. I guess extortion does pay, but in a year when his contract is up, how much do you want to bet they will have permanently lost a customer?

Ah yes true I thought they had some for shaw direct.
I dont see what the deal is.. if you dont want a contract, dont enter into one. If you want to get a free rental, go ahead. no one puts a gun to your head

They make you sign a contract to get a discount rate, or to get a free PVR. Both of which are useless if you don't want the service because it sucks. Best case you will be telling your friends " I have a free PVR, I can use it to hold my door open when the Shaw tech arrives, free of charge, to install my contract free internet, TV and phone."
The point is my little story (in the previous post) was, signing a contract to get a good deal isn't always a good deal. It might seem like it when you are signing it, but then you end up screwed by unmentioned policies, fees, poor product or just bad customer service.
End result is, you are 'stuck' with an inferior product unless you pay them out. With Shaw you can get your 6 month introductory rate, and if the service sucks after 1 month you can cancel it and not feel like Tracy Lords after an all night filming session.
Signing a contract removes your ability to demand suitable services. So while you are claiming Telus can provide the best deal, you will never truly have the power to demand that service.

No, you are wrong. You "sign" a contract for the PVR. There is no discounted rate for contract, there is bundling discounts, but you dont need a contract for that.
If you dont want a contract, you can be like shaw and bell clients and pay for your PVR. If you want a free rental take the contract.

They called him, gave him some crazy low quote if he signed a contract.
He signed contract.
Crazy low rate was not real (See previous post for details).
Unless they offered him a deal that is available without a contract, but asked him to sign a contract anyway, without giving him anything for it, then you clearly are correct. In this case, there is no PVR involved though.

The benefit of signing up a term with TELUS TV is the PVR. That's it. I can't speak on what one agent may have said, especially if it was longer than a few months ago.
You get 5$ discount off your phone and internet each for having both. If you have TV too.. you get yet another 5$ off.

k, clearly you have no idea what I am talking about then.
I will stop whoring my post count and go to sleep. Mrs Rathji is probably considering an expedition to the basement to find me.

not true. the fastest speed that Verizon offers for FiOS in the states is 50 Mbps. currently Shaw is testing the new DOCSIS 3 network which has the Warp speed (used to be named Nitro) sitting at 100 Mbps

just wait until Shaw releases their wireless packages (should be within the next 1-2 years). J.R. Shaw has already publicly stated that there will be zero contracts for any cellphone service that they provide

Telus drives me insane.
A couple weeks ago, I get a card in my mail offering a really amazing price on a tv/internet/phone bundle. I'm interested, so I go to their website only to see that "Telus TV is not currently offered in your area"
Well then why the hell are you spending money to advertise it to me!?!
