You're kidding right? Put you through a course? You mean like the one you likely took in the last 2 years. Simply put, if you've racked up this many tickets in such a short amount of time and forgot to pay one, you don't deserve to be driving on the same road as me or anyone else. Put you through a course - that's gold.

Just when I thought I could not feel any more horrible about this, I read the tags on this thread.

Actually, I had not taken any driving courses. I just had a half hour driving test to get my GDL.

I understand what you are saying, its just that I heard that you could take a driving course and have a few demerits points taken off. I just thought there might be something similar for my situation.

I'm pretty sure once you get the notice that you will be suspended then all avenues of getting out of it are gone to you. In fact, to even delay the suspension is a huge feat (ie, your car has to be your main source of income). The defensive driving course you take is meant to be proactive in regards to suspension, not reactive.

I was told, by a police officer no joke (so don't come down on me for wasting the courts time or having no respect for cops) that you should fight every ticket you get. Often you'll get the demerits taken off if you agree to plead. Sometimes the officer doesn't show up and you don't have anything.

Course this only works if you can work your schedule around it.

However, if you already HAVE the demerits, I think you may just have to live with your suspension. I'm not sure how they can go backwards to remove it off your record.

And you don't wanna turn a 1 mo suspension into a 1 year one by trying to drive on a suspended license. They NEVER look on that favorably.

If you really wanna get around it, ask a lawyer what they think. I think we have a few around here.

Once you get the notice in the mail are finished. Even though you probably will continue driving like an idiot its good to see punks like you off the road for at least a month.

Here's a defensive driving course you can take online. It will give you a 3 demerit reduction. Costs $110 but it may be too late for you but it would be a good idea to get in touch with the government.

http://www.defensivedriving.ca/

As for this course, I haven't taken it from them but it never hurts to upgrade your skills. You'll be ahead of 90% of the rest of Calgary drivers.

Also you may be taking a hit when you renew your insurance, so this course may also help there.

There is not now, nor has there ever been a causal link found between speed and frequency of accidents. You are as (if not more) likely to have a car accident at 30 km/h as 130 km/h.

How can that be? And on what roads are you talking about? Because you drive 30 down the Deerfoot, you're going to be causing all sorts of problems. And if you drive 130 down a residential road, how do you have anywhere near the reaction time required to make decisions on such a small road to avoid collisions?

So if a deer jumps out at you on the highway and you're going 30km/h, you are just as likely to hit it as if you're going 130km/h? Riiiiight. At lower speeds, you have a lower reaction time, enabling you to prevent many accidents that would have been unavoidable had you been going faster.

If some statistics show otherwise, it is simply because there tend to be more obstacles and accident potentials in places where you drive slower. Driving 130 through downtown Calgary is more likely to cause an accident than going 30.

And then there's the whole severity aspect.

He gets two tickets and the CP moral authority is jumping down his throat. Hilarious. I'm sure every one of you has sped before so get off your high horse.

Well, not really, but very predictable. Empathy is a rare trait here.

Am I the only one that thinks it's just a little bit ironic that Driveway is adamant that there is no causal link between speed and frequency of accidents, and then finishes his statement with the implication that there is in fact a causual link between speed and accidends (though in this case the opposite of what one would expect).

Also, just because there hasn't been a demonstated causal link between the two, doesn't mean there can't be a strong correlation. Whether this correlation exists or not I don't know, but there is definately a correlation between speed of accident, and severity of injury which is what was originally implied by the "You could kill someone at that speed" comment.
