Man, some serious Halo haters out there! First off, COD4 is IMO the best console multiplayer there is, as long as you are on Xbox Live. Secondly, the single player of the first Halo is what hooked everyone, as there was not a single game that was available, with all the action, terrain, crazy enemies, graphics and flying ships that Halo has. Third, the local multiplayer for Halo is excellent. No other console game had four guys playing at my house more often than that (besides hockey, maybe GoldenEye before that).
Dreamcast Soulcaliber also drew a crowd, but was not four player. We would often hook up several Xboxes and play 8 or 12 players. It was very good. If you are dissing the game now, then you may not have played when it first came out.
The world has now moved on, and the theme of space fighting may have been replaced with modern soldiers, but I still like Halo. My friends are just too busy now to come over for Firefight, or we are too busy to get on Xbox Live to sign in at the same time. Heck, we have a hard enough time playing vid hockey against each other.

Those other games were available...just not on the Xbox. Halo was so popular because it was the only thing resembling a great game on the Xbox for a long time after it's release.

I know I much prefer COD4, the multiplayer was simply perfect. I loved leveling up my character, releasing the helicopter, air strikes and everything else was great. The assorted Halos that have come out are much of the same: lots of jumping, aliens, purples, and strange weapons.

For me, COD is better when you're on Xbox live, but when lanning. There is nothing that can touch Halo. Just pure awesome. 4 v 4 or more with all your friends is just ridiculously fun.

For me, Gears 1 or 2 is the best for lanning or system-linking.

i didn't have the original Xbox, so i played the first Halo when it was ported to PC. and it was very boring, it had nothing on the best FPS games on the PC. i could see how someone playing it who had never tried a PC shooter could see it as awesome, but it just didn't do anything new for me, seemed like a very generic FPS
