The most-watched sports event of the weekend and one of the most-watched TV shows of the week was not a CFL game, nor an NFL game nor anything that really mattered. It was a pre-season game between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, which featured more guys from Grand Rapids and the Marlies than it did NHL players.
But still, CBC drew more than 1 million viewers. Equally crazy was that fact that 253,000 tuned in for a Canucks-Flames exhibition on TSN2. That's a channel many Canadians don't get and many haven't even heard of.
Come on, people. It's pre-season. It doesn't mean anything. Get a grip.
You can bet, with this new ratings system producing bigger numbers than ever, the'll have champagne on ice at CBC headquarters when the season starts for real on Thursday. Okay, considering the economic climate it will more likely be beer, but they're expecting regular audiences of more than 2 million once the real season starts.
After all, it's hockey.
Here are the top weekend English-language sports ratings, according to BBM overnight figures:
1. NHL, 5pm MT: Red Wings at Leafs, Saturday, CBC: 1,031,000
2. CFL, 4pm MT:Roughriders at Eskimos, Saturday, TSN: 966,000

^^ Is there a chance you could post the respective timeslots for each event? Don't worry about it if it's too much work.

Couple notes:

They changed the way they do ratings this year. Actually only a couple weeks ago. The numbers last year for a CFL/NFL game would be 400,000, now somehow they have over 1 million. They said they can track people watching in Bars and stuff better now. Edit; looks like you mentioned the rating system.

Remember a couple years ago the CFL changed all their playoff games to Saturday to avoid going head to head with the NFL? It didn't make a difference in viewers, and just upset CFL fans. I don't think the CFL has problems going up against the NFL on Sunday, and I don't think they're losing viewers to be honest.

i agree worth, the CFL isn't worried about losing ratings to the NFL, but the NHL on the other hand...
here are the ratings for the first weekend of October, Hockey's big return
As expected, the new ratings system has been very kind to hockey.
CBC drew an average audience of 2.5 million for its season opener last Thursday and Saturday was no disappointment. Its regional coverage of the Leafs at Capitals, Habs at Sabres and Senators at Rangers averaged 1.74 million. These are audiences CBC hopes for during the playoffs.
Of course, all ratings have risen and everybody's setting records. But there are some interesting revelations.
Let's take the Buffalo Bills, a team promoters and those who worship at the altar of the NFL would have us believe is wildly popular in Ontario. But Sunday's Bills-Dolphins game was pretty far down the list and behind all four CFL games.
Even when ratings for the NFL package shown simultaneously on City and Sportsnet are combined (558,000), they beat only CFL game.
Here are the weekend ratings for English-Canadian television, according to BBM overnight figures.

1. NHL, 5pm MT:Early games, Saturday, CBC: 1,740,000
2. NHL, 8pm MT: Flames at Oilers, Saturday, CBC: 1,153,000
3. CFL, 8pm MT:Roughriders at Lions, Friday, TSN: 923,000
4. NFL, 11am MT:Early games, Sunday, CTV: 736,000
5. CFL, 5pm MT:Tiger-Cats at Stampeders, Saturday, TSN: 697,000
6. CFL, 5pm MT:Eskimos at Blue Bombers, Friday, TSN: 684,000
7. NHL, 4:30pm MT:Hockey Night In Canada pre-game show, Saturday, CBC: 628,000
8. NHL, 1pm MT:Red Wings vs. Blues, Friday, TSN: 472,000****
9. CFL, 11am MT:Alouettes at Argonauts, Saturday, TSN: 446,000***
10. NFL, 6pm MT:Chargers at Steelers, Sunday, TSN: 422,000*

**** I think these were replayed on TSN2 on friday night, but could only find the game times on the NHL sked

comibined almost 2.5 mil people watching sports at 5 on saturday, i many people may have switched between football and hockey, as the Stamps game wasn't all that great.

Yeah, except you fail to mention that the one game it trounced was the game that would've been the most important CFL game in two biggest Canadian markets.

Except that the number for the alouettes/argos game doesn't include RDS, which is probably significant (225,000 under the old system).

RDS is crazy popular, even amongst anglophones, and to be honest if you are bilingual, I would suspect RDS' coverage of the Al's is better than TSN's, plus I would suspect 90% of the bars would put the RDS broadcast on over the TSN broadcast.

The same could be said of the local CBS affiliate in Buffalo, which would most likely be the station that Toronto receives.

that and it was the game least in doubt for the weekend. Toronto may be the biggest market people wise, but they are probably the lowest in per capita viewership of cfl games of any city in Canada week in and week out.
the Argos are by far the worst team, playing in a city where the media (aside from TSN) essentially ignores them, playing the best team in the league on a saturday morning when hockey is kicking off. i wish they would show the RDS numbers in this too.
i think everyone in the country (except maybe extreme Argo homers) picked Montreal to win that game

Yeah, I'm in no way saying that the Argos game is a reflection of a true CFL audience. My argument was against the author of the article saying that the numbers from the Bills game vs. the Argos game was a reflection of the popularity of the NFL vs. CFL in Southern Ontario.

I'd venture that a good chunk of the audience for Arogs/Als were Als fans. The Bills/Phins was a divisional game, but it was also between two teams who have been terrible this year.

I still think the NFL is more popular in the GTA than the CFL. I certainly don't think the Argos could compete with the Bills if they moved to Toronto.

thats fair rube, a large number probably were Al's fans, but it doesn't take a high percentage of 5 million people to get significant numbers. the support for NFL is probably higher then the CFL in Toronto, as people move there from all over and in the NFL will choose whatever team they want and watch on tv. that or go see the Argos, who have been bad since Allen retired.
Im not sure that the Bills would do that good in Toronto after awhile. people from southern Ontario have gotten used to going to Bills games or Lions games etc and enjoying the tailgaiting/atmosphere. the trouble with moving the Bills to Toronto is the Stadium isn't great for football and there is nowhere to tailgate around it. also the fans create the atmosphere, in the NFL they can just go and its there, whereas we haven't seen that they will create that atmosphere without some help (ie Argos games).
I am interested to see what would happen in Toronto if they got a team, but so far the Bills experiment hasn't been what they have expected (although its also a losing team).
for tv viewership, i TSN would likely air the games, but they would force them to play the late game on TSN sunday nigts, so they could still show the argos and Toronto NFL'ers on tv. I don't think the NFL will get a team in Toronto, they don't have a big enough stadium and now that Ted Rogers is dead, i don't know if they are willing to put up 1$billion to get one.

Yeah, I'm a staunch NFL honk, but I don't see a team in Toronto anytime soon. The biggest reason, IMO, is that we Canadians don't believe in public funds for stadiums. No way in hell a new NFL owner agrees to move a team, especially to Toronto, without a stadium deal in place. And Skydome just isn't fit to hold an NFL team.

absolutely right Rube, its soo hard to get public money to build stadiums in Canada. anyways here are the ratings from this thanksgiving weekend

baseball did well with three Sportsnet games scoring more than 500,000 viewers even though not all of the games were on all four channels.

Also doing well is the CFL, which again finished second only to hockey. Not doing so well, sadly, is Toronto FC. The team's key game against San Jose on Saturday drew a paltry 145,000 viewers to CBC -- 31,000 fewer than the number who watched an under-20 World Cup qualifier between Germany and Brazil the same day.

Here are the top-rated shows on English-Canadian television, as supplied by BBM overnight ratings:
1. NHL: 5pm MT: Penguins at Leafs, Saturday, CBC: 1,686,000
2. NHL: 8pm MT: Canadiens at Oilers, Saturday, CBC: 1,004,000
3. CFL: 2:30pm MT: Blue Bombers at Tiger-Cats, Monday, TSN: 949,000
4. CFL: 7pm MT: Lions at Eskimos, Friday, TSN: 824,000
5. NFL: 11am MT: Early games, Sunday, CTV: 762,000
6. NFL: 6pm MT:Jets at Dolphins, Monday, TSN: 759,000
7. CFL: 11am MT:Stampeders at Alouettes, Monday, TSN: 722,000***

13. Golf: 10am MT: Presidents Cup final round, Sunday, TSN: 476,000**
14. NHL 430pm MT: Hockey Night In Canada pre-game, Saturday, CBC: 447,000

update time!
for the 3rd weekend of October
Good weekend for CFL, F1 and TFC

While hockey and football, as usual, are at the top of the ratings heap, the past weekend was a pretty good one for Formula One racing and Toronto FC. The Brazilian Grand Prix drew 365,000 viewers to TSN on Sunday, which shows what a difference starting in the afternoon instead of dawn can do for audiences.
Playing a do-or-die game also helped Toronto FC, whose victory over Real Salt Lake attracted 229,000 to CBC on Saturday afternoon.
The new ratings system continues to look good on the CFL, which again dominated the non-hockey ratings.
Friday night included MLB playoffs, CFL and a Flames game

top 3 all occured on Saturday

Here are the top ratings on English-Canadian television for last weekend, according to BBM overnight figures.

NHL won yet again, but I will note that the eastern teams all were on and vancouver was playing, so 4 canadian teams at once, did pretty well, going up against the second half of the Riders-Lions game. I'm not sure how they work the ratings, if they have to watch the whole game, Im sure people switched over to hockey after the football game.
big seperation after the top 3 as well, and solid combined ratings if you look at sportsnet and citytv for the same timeslot of nfl games.

World Series hits ratings homer

While many out there have been predicting the death of baseball for some time, the fact is that all the sport needs are a couple of marquee teams and a competitive series to draw huge audiences.
Now, we are talking relatively huge here. Huge huge is what Hockey Night In Canada drew Saturday for the Leafs-Habs game: 2.45 million viewers. In this country, nothing tops hockey. Nothing ever will.
And imagine how big those numbers would be if the Leafs could ever ice a good team, or the Canadiens could play consistent hockey. By the way, if there are any thoughts that a bad start will cause Leaf fans to break ankles jumping off the bandwagon, Sportsnet drew the weekend's seventh-highest audience, for a Leaf game shown only in Ontario.

Relatively huge was the audience Rogers Sportsnet attracted for Sunday's World Series game: 840,000. That doesn't include all those who watched on Fox, which I'm guessing was at least another 800,000. That's not hockey huge, but it's huge.

Not so huge were the Toronto Raptors. They got off to a great start last week, drawing a record audience of 420,000 on The Score. But that fell to 240,000 Friday and only 190,000 on Sunday. (meh, watching sports on the score sucks anyways, no hd)

Here are the top English-Canadian sports ratings for the weekend, as supplied by BBM overnight calculations:
1. NHL: 5pm MT: Leafs at Canadiens, Saturday, CBC: 2,453,000
2. MLB: 6pm MT: World Series Game 4, Sunday, Sportsnet: 840,000*
3. NHL: 8pm MT: Red Wings at Flames, Saturday, CBC: 809,000
4. NFL: 2pm MT: Early games, Sunday, CTV: 786,000
5. NHL: 4:40pm MT: Hockey Night In Canada pre-game, Saturday, CBC: 781,000 (wow, thats alot of people for pregame, not sure if pregame should be counted though, as thats basically people tuning in early)

6. CFL: 12pm MT: Roughriders at Tiger-Cats, Saturday, TSN: 775,000

7. NHL: 5pm MT: Leafs at Sabres, Friday, Sportsnet: 692,000**
8. NFL: Falcons at Saints, Monday, TSN: 679,000
9. NFL: Vikings at Packers, Sunday, Citytv: 673,000
10. MLB: 6pm MT: World Series Game 3, Saturday, Sportsnet: 633,000*
11. CFL: 11am MT: Blue Bombers at Alouettes, Sunday, TSN: 537,000***
12. CFL: 8pm MT: Stampeders at Lions, Saturday, TSN: 519,000 (battling with Flames game, but still should've gotten more considering close game)

13. CFL: Argonauts at Eskimos, Friday, TSN: 515,000
14. NHL: 2pm MT: Thrashers at Senators, Saturday, CBC: 499,000

I didn't do all the times here, wasn't sure of the times, don't feel like looking them up.
NHL had strong weekend, strong world series numbers, CFL fans looking past towards this coming weekend, as playoffs will be decided at that point. (and 3 blowouts)

Weird weekend. I'm still not entirely convinced on the accuracy of these ratings. Probably a bit of an aberration to have the NFL and MLB jump the CFL like that. I'm interested to see how the NFL does against the Grey Cup in a couple of weeks. Right now the NFL has Baltimore vs. Pittsburgh as its night game that week. I don't know what time Grey Cup kicks off but the NFL game will likely have playoff implications, although between two smaller market teams.
