get rid of the microwave and don't look back. i have been without one for over 3 years now, and love it. all fresh cooked food all the time. if you need food in a hurry, a microwave dinner full of sodium is not the way to go.

Call up my buddy - his nickname is Macho Mumu - press 1 for infadel and 2 for sales. 1-800-782-3425
He will give you a great bargain - some of them might explode and his ebay rating isnt great but the price is reasonable even though they arent the best quality.

While I don't disagree with cooking fresh and avoid prepackaged garbage; the microwave is a great cooking tool and there's a reason its found in most (if not all) restaurant kitchens.

Yeah I try to not use the microwave too much as well. Unless Im making popcorn or need food really fast I wont use it. I stopped cooking veggies in the microwave as I learned that cooking them in the microwave removes all the nutrients.

Go to London Drugs, they usually have excellent prices on counter top microwaves. Look for the Panasonic Inverter, the 1.1 cu foot should cost around $159 to $209 depending on if sale etc. It comes as two models, one has a regular touch button styling, the other has that plus a round knob. The regular touch button styling is easier to use, both work great though.
Removal of nutrients during cooking of foods depends on a couple of factors.
The heat used, the amount of water used, and the amount of time cooked. Most vitamins etc are water soluble so try to cook with the least amount of water as possible and for a short period of time.

the reason is pure laziness. a good restaurant should never be using a microwave. if they use a microwave, it means they are using it to defrost frozen food (bad) or re-heating food (bad). if they are using it as the sole means of cooking any food, it's even worse.
yes, i know they exist in 'professional' kitchens, but that doesn't mean it's right.

I am a from scratch cook and while I do not rely on my microwave for most tasks, to say one is lazy because they use a microwave is a bit over the top.
I use mine for melting chocolate, butter etc, giving foods a quick 2 or 3 minute preheat before putting in the oven, perhaps quickly cooking a veggie that is to go in a casserole instead of blanching it.... whatever.
It is a kitchen appliance, it saves time, it can compliment other ways to cook, there is a place for it if people so desire.

to use a microwave as a shortcut to traditional cooking/preperation techniques is lazy imo. a microwave to heat something up before you put it in the oven? do you hand wash your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher?

WTF? How is washing dishes before putting them in the dishwasher being lazy. Sounds like a lot of work to me.

Nope, makes no sense to me unless your dishwasher is of low quality and does not do an adequate job.
I do however use the dishwasher to wash baseball caps!!!
Appliances of any kind are our servants and how we wish to use our servants is entirely up to us. It does not make us lazy if we wish to have a servant.
Now in the meantime, I suggest you are lazy for using a stove or an oven, get out there and build an open fire and pit, start cooking the traditional way man!!!!
And while you are at it, dig a pit, get a block of ice, put some sawdust shavings over it and use that to refrigerate your food!!!

Nothing better than going to Burger King or DQ and ordering a burger that gets warmed up in a microwave
I wouldn't eat in a resturant if I knew they used a microwave. Chances are they are thawing frozen food or reheating something.

And using the internet instead of a typewriter and a cork bulletin board is lazy too.
ANYWAY, I think Wookie is SOL. If that microwave made it 10-20 years, count your blessings and buy a new one. Just know that the new one won't last nearly as long.
