I have first hand knowledge that the rights fees for Fox Sports Radio and ESPN Radio aren't that far off in the whole scheme of things. If I had to guess and I'm just speculating, Fan 960 went back to ESPN because of bad reviews from listeners and that's it.

Terrible news, Fox is way better then ESPN. Fox weekend coverage (most of what I listened to) was so much better then the crap ESPN has on it is crazy. Kennedy and Morriarty along with Weber & Dee's made the weekend listening great. My only beef is the silly Sunday night baseball they play as it overode the Farnham and Ferrera show, which is also wicked. Fox just brought back Tony Bruno for the weekday evenings, he is a better radio personality then anyone at ESPN.
Very upset with this news, aside from Flames games when I am in the car, the Fan960 has lost me as a listener.
Edit: Ben Maller also brought back just this past week for the wekeend overnights - another great host. Thanks Fan 960.

People never like change and always prefer the status quo and have a tough time giving something new or different a chance.
I liked Mike and Mike so I missed that when they switched to FOX.
Other than that I only listen to radio late at night when I cant sleep. I found the FOX shows sometimes to be too thin on sports. They would talk pop culture or current events rather than sports.
One thing I loved about FOX was the weekend morning show about auto racing. Race Day on Fox on FOX with Rob DAmico & Michele Rahal Ill have to find somewhere on the net to listen to this as I hadnt previously heard and now look forward to listening to it.

Surprised someone is saying they liked Tony Bruno - different strokes I guess. I did only hear him once but his show seemed filled with all the tripe (bad jokes, sound effects, hosts yelling at each other and callers with nonsense ideas) that are fodder for comedians and TV shows that lampoon the sports radio business. Give me All Night with Jayson Stark and all the rest over anything - ANYTHING - on FOX. Barf.

Just in time for the season.

Then why did a whack of the Canadian sports radio stations switch?

Thank god!!! I will now go back to turning on the radio before I go to bed at night. JT And the Brick are the last two people I would ever give a show too. The two biggest homers in the world, not to mention them sprinkling in there political views from time to time. ESPN is just such a better run station and also have basketball games on from time to time and after 11 don't just repeat the same program again and again.

If you miss Tony Bruno I can help you out:
"I am the greatest thing that has happened to sports radio. ESPN sucks. I rule. Lets take a call from someone who tell will me how awesome I am."
Just repeat that over three hours and you have the Tony Bruno show.
For those missing JT the Brick, do the same thing except yell the quoted sentence.
With Sporting News Radio out there Fox News was a third rate broadcast with hosts that had a huge inferiority complex in regards to ESPN.
If you were yelling and saying how much ESPN sucked 95 % of the time you were gone.
Terrible broadcast that should be gone for good.
And Petrous is the dumbest/worst radio personality there is. Has not said one intelligent thing in his life, nevermind his lies about playing for USC.

Awesome news! I went to bed and turned on the radio and heard Jason Smith. I was ecstatic. So glad that the Fan 960 went back to ESPN. Now i can actually listen to people talk about sports.

Looks like they changed their mind again, FOX is back on 960 according to this week's program schedule. Caught a snippet with Kelly Kirch last week talking about the change and it definitely had a "don't shoot the messenger" vibe.

The email I got overnight from Kelly Kirch:
A message from Kelly Kirch – Program Director, Sportsnet 960 The FAN:
As of Monday, July 9th, Sportsnet 960 The FAN will no longer carry ESPN radio. This was not our choice, it was decided for us. We are disappointed that we are longer able to carry on our relationship with ESPN radio. To be clear it was our intention here in Calgary to carry the syndicated radio feed of ESPN at various times on an ongoing basis.
If you wish to voice your dissatisfaction with this change, you may call ESPN direct at 1-860-766-2000. Fox Sports Radio will now be on Sportsnet 960 The FAN.

Meh, no more all night with Jason Smith = I really don't care anymore.
Once ESPN dropped all night and went with highlight garbage, I stopped listening.

What was with the video highlight audio being played on the frkkin radio? When I first heard it, I thought someone had thrown the wrong switch. Now its normal radio "content." Height of arrogance by ESPN. Screw them.

Why does the Fan960 have it's own all-night program.
I think there would be enough people listening and enough people phoning-in!
I'm sure there are lots of people here on CP would could host a show like that. Email them!

$$$.
The ratings for overnight radio are terrible across the board.
It really is too bad because the elimination of overnight radio programming has eliminated one of the best training grounds for young broadcasters.

ESPN = 20% owner of TSN
With TSN expanding into the radio market they probably don't want to supply content to a direct competitor, even if there is no TSN radio in Calgary.

Is the cost of show like that alot? You'd need a host and a producer right?
Could an intern do it for nothing?
Even when they're running FOX or ESPN stuff, does a person need to be there?
