Could not agree more. LOL at the McDonald's suggestion. Give your freaking head a shake.
You're in India, eat indian food! If you really don't want to get sick then stick with barbequed stuff or freshly made stuff. There's delicious indian wraps with chicken tika. Also, get the pani puri. It's a delicious mix of friend pastries with chillies, tomatoes and curry. My god that's great stuff.
I travelled India and Bangladesh and ate everywhere. The last places you want to be avoiding are the street food stands. That's the best food!!!

Indian food is disgusting so it makes sense that people are recommending avoiding it. Add in the likelyhood you get insanely sick and eating the local food seems like a terrible idea.
I don't have any recommendations because there isn't a place on earth I would want to return to less than India, but I hope you have a good time and a much better trip than I did.

You. Take. That. Back. Indian food is the second best cuisine in the world after French.

Yes. India is a poo-hole. And that's an insult to poo-holes.

I'm East Indian and what you said there sounded a little harsh to me. Just because you don't like Indian food doesn't mean that everyone else has to stay off it as well. There are a LOT of very good restaurants in India if you just spend the money to eat there and its relatively cheap when compared to Canadian Dollars. In addition to that, you get the best service imaginable. The thing is most of the people who go visit India from the West get such a huge culture shock. All they see is the poverty, how dirty things are, how people live and then they just generalize their opinion that all of India is the same way. There's a much richer side of India that people need to experience and I guarantee you will be blown away. Yeah there are things which are not upto par in India and that's why India is a developing nation, a very fast developing nation. And if India is the last place you rather be then there aren't many places that you can travel to considering most of Africa, Asia and Middle Eastern nations are the same.
I do realize you are entitled to your opinion but as an East Indian I just couldn't ignore your comment.

Indian food is delicious , when i was in India I ate at local restaurants, but not dirty street side ones. Always ONLY drink BOTTLED water (obviously) and you should be fine. If a place looks really dirty, avoid it. Most places have decent cheap restaurants that are fine to eat at, at the food is awesome.

You're right I should have said that many people find Indian food disgusting not a blanket statement that it is disgusting to all.

As a kid I lived in Yemen for 3 years, which makes India look rich and just as dirty, I have worked in Yemen for another 2 years as an adult and traveled all over the world to many countries just as poor/dirty as India. So I don't think that it was culture shock for me.
I will gladly travel back to many places in Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia prior to going back to India.
I think that jolinar will have a great trip and really enjoy it, but from my experience there are certainly very good reasons to avoid eating in local restaurants.

I'll consider your recommendation to shake my head, but let me recommend to you actually reading the thread before replying to it.
The OP clearly stated he doesn't like Indian food, and I was responding to that. Responding with "oh you don't like Indian food, well there's Indian food here" seems pretty useless when someone is looking for alternate options.
I am Indian, and have eaten my fair share of Indian food, so I'm certainly not recommending McDonalds as if I prefer it. My family has farms in India and a lot of the food we ate was home grown and picked the day of, so I'm quite aware of the "real" Indian food and how good it is.

Be prepared for lots of Indians. lol, I am told they are the most amazing, nicest people to travelers. They will take you in, feed you and out you up for the night with the greatness of their heart.
