Well we have only one option for NE Calgary now... nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

"Rat" is just a euphemism for an "NDP activist" - luckily, he was "euthenized", so we can sleep easy, knowing we are still "rat" free.

The rats that you see hunting are the western wood rat or commonly referred to as the Pack Rat. These do live naturally in Alberta forests however they are usually solitary and not communal animals. These are similar in lifestyle as a chipmunk that may live in a forest and only on rare occasions will infest a home as they prefer the native habitat.
This rat is the Norway Rat and is of major concern because they are the Famous New York Sewer style rats.

Yeah, Alberta used to have "Rat Patrol". We were the world's largest rat free landmass - patrols would investigate claims of rats, inspect trucks coming in, basically constant vigilant rat extermination groups financed by the Alberta government.
I recall when they said they were going to cease doing it, seems about 10 or 15 years ago now.

Four rat burrows have been spotted and it’s believed there could be up to five of the animals scurrying throughout the northeast neighbourhood, Bruce said Saturday.
He refused to reveal which neighbourhood the burrows have been found in.
"Four or five, if they’re left alone, will soon be four or five thousand," Bruce said.
A female rat can become pregnant 45 days after birth and they breed often.
"We take this very seriously because we know they can come in on shipments," he said. "There are no rats entrenched in Alberta and we want to keep it that way."
One rat chewed a hole through the wood foundation of a home, while other homeowners found their backyard sheds gnawed at, said Bruce.

I've seen quite a few rats in Vancouver. Just last week on Granville I saw a group of them come up from a construction dig site to feast on a puddle of puke that a party goer had left nearby. Nasty little creatures. The rats I mean.

IIRC the Herald noted that one breeding can produce as many as 15,000 rats per year! The rat patrol also still exists and costs about $500k per year, but its suspected that saves millions each year in crop damage, building damage etc. each year.
