I want to teach myself Jazz piano.

I am a beginner in terms of piano playing but have a good grasp of scales and some jazzy chords. My reading of sheet music is abysmal as I've always played purely by improvisation and not from prewritten music.

Any suggestions on what I could do to facilitate teaching myself Jazz piano? Most good jazz doesn't have sheet music.

Listen the Bill Evans 'Live at the Village Vanguard' whilst on heroin, well the heroin is optional but the Bill Evans 3 cd set is close to sublime.

I love jazz, more specifically fusion. There used to be a time when fusion was extremely popular (Aerosmith used to open for Mahavishnu Orchestra) but then for some reason people confused it with disco and it died. Sad really.

Come to think of it I'm more into fusion than traditional jazz... I just wish fusion would make a comeback. Whatever happened to musical ability holding value over image? *le sigh*

I bet that course would be interesting. I readily confess I'm nowhere near the level of being an aficionado of it, but on a sociological level, it has profound cultural impact. It's rock and roll before there was rock and roll, crossing a lot of racial lines along the way.

And to think, without jazz we wouldn't be subjugated to country music.

Cliff Bungalow-Mission Jazz Concert Series

After two exciting years the CBM Jazz concert series is now in its third season. The monthly series of concerts features some of Calgary's best jazz musicians and ensembles and provides an ideal opportunity to spend a relaxing evening. The concerts are conducted in the quiet listening and family friendly environment of the Cliff Bungalow-Mission community hall and take place on the first wednesday of every month. Each 2 hour performance starts at 8 pm so everybody can get a good night sleep and be rested the next morning. Coffee, tea, and beverages are served. There is a $15 cover fee for each event. The Cliff Bungalow - Mission Community Centre is located at: 2201 Cliff Street S.W. two blocks west of 4th Street S.W. at 22nd Avenue S.W. Street parking is available. Public Transit users get there with the no 3 bus. Get off at 4th Street S.W. & 22nd Avenue.

I saw the Rick Climans Jazz group last night (a quartet). It was fun - they did some standards (Coltrane, Girl From Impanena, and Moondance), and some original compositions. They had wine last night.
