This is what the govt built up the sustainability fund for. Hopefully we don't have to use for much longer.

To be fair (ugh), the root of this problem predates Eddy.

Its easy to say that, but the ship was sailing high when eddy took control. The guy at the top deserves the blame.

He is the one that bowed to a pathetic opposition on royalty rates, he is the one who finally failed at negotiating with Tsu Tina.

A farmer from blah town Alberta is the Premier of Alberta - you know there is something wrong with the core of the PC party. If only the Liberals would rebrand and tone down the anti religion voice they could easily force the PC into a minority situation.

Touche.

Though really, failing on the deal with the Tsuu Tina ultimately saved us a ton of money, and frankly, I don't think it is fair to blame the government for the natives rejecting a ton of free money for nothing. You are right on the royalty mess, however.

Personally I think he was caught between a rock on the royalty issue,he does it and it doesn't work he is screwed,he stands up against it and the economy falters badly (which it has)the opposition would spin that badly for him cause he didn't change the royalty rates..

If he woulda left royalties where they were we probably still would be in the same boat we are in now..only difference is he gave companies someone to blame other then themselves..

Drilling activity in this province has not stopped, it has moved. That is in direct correlation to the royalty rates which the blame 100% falls on unsteady eddy.

I dont expect the leader of this province to be a world beater, I expect him not be a complete bafoon with some sort of secondary education after high school that doesnt include some BS correspondence courses or at the very least some real world experience that doesnt include running a mildly successful farm.

Its embarrassing that he is the premier. Oh yah, and if you think I am in any way shape or form Liberal/NDP/Green - hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha.

The problem in Alberta isn't oil though, its natural gas prices.

Right, because people wait until they have enough money saved up to purchase a house, go to university, buy a car, etc. People go into debt all of time. It's not inherently bad to go into debt, you just have to do so prudently.

I'm usually the unofficial CP health guy

From my end, cuts are already happening, and projects and initiatives that were termed untouchable before are facing cuts or cancellations.

(For the record, this had to be said for the asshats that preached the above 'truths' about Alberta's economy, I don't mean it as a generalization on all Albertans, or the people who post here. I've heard so much preaching over the past few years it's nice to tell the idiots "I told you so" when in reality I don't wish ill on your province)

The truth about Alberta's economy is that it's probably the worse off of any region with similar mineral properties of any developped country in the world. Years and years, and years of prosperity and absolutely NOTHING to show for it other than inflated housing prices and inflated wages.

I always get a kick of the hardcore Albertans here banging their prosperity drum. All it takes is a one year of a recession in this Province and it almost reverts to a third world country. You'd think that given the commodity driven economy that Alberta would be prepared in the fluctuation of oil/gas prices. Hell no! Spend, spend, spend, and than there is the gimmie, gimmie, gimmie of the people (you know, the as an Albertan i'm entitled to make 70K a year and have the biggest truck in the lot even though I have no education or seviceable skills ). There's no happy medium here. Why not level things out instead of continously shifting from end of the economic spectrum to the other?

I love this Province, love the City of Calgary, but i'm getting closer and closer to punching my ticket out. I'd rather be a little worse off in another Province with a lot more security in my job/social service, than live here and live like a Rock Star for 5 years and than spend the next 5 constantly worrying if I'm going to have a job or have to take cut backs because no one within in the government or the population in general is willing to reign things in when the going is good.

I'm really hoping something interesting comes out of this Wildrose Alliance renewal. I don't know any of the people involved, but I do know that some other initiatives are taking place down here in Calgary with the intention of upsetting the PCs next election.

The last bust-cycle in energy lasted almost 15 years. You can't spend your way through something like that.
