The British soldiers are being as honest with you as the Taliban would be in the opposite situation. It was a professional accomplishment.

Furlong also took pride in the professional accomplishment of taking out a Taleban commander before "he could kill anyone else." Although the McLean's article is murky it does seem to a reader that he regarded his actions as a good thing.

Our killers are authorized by ourselves, via our elected representatives, to do these things on our behalf. That doesn't mean as citizens we are 100% unanimous in that opinion but generally it's the majority opinion.

In the murk of conflict, for what you might consider it to be worth, we can say the Taleban have no such authorization from the public.

I was watching a program once on the leading USA sniper of the Vietnam war - with over 100 kills I believe - and he too regarded his actions very simply and coldly as a profession and hadn't lost any sleep over it.

First and foremost, thats a kill that has to feel good, they killed a senior member of an organization that likes to beat woman over a ridiculous code of conduct, throw fuel on woman and light them on fire, kill teachers, drive cars ladened with explosives into the middle of a crowded market and pull the string among other things.

The British, American's and Canadian's have seen hundreds of their comrades killed using a strategy of IED's that this guy probably helped plan so the frustration has to be there.

It was an amazing shot.

I doubt any sniper is going to act reserved or slightly saddened at the loss of human life at his hands. Basically this guy was on a target list, it was probably a long and frustrating hunt, and he got popped.

Snipers are always shown in movies as cold calculating killers, and when they're doing their thing they are, but they're also very human and usually on the young side, so their emotions upon completion are probably all over the map.

In other words, the target was a complete son of a bitch and the world is a better place without him.

Hardly a lucky shot, even at 1 of 3, there aren't a lot of guys in the world that could have pulled it off.

He might not go to sleep thinking about what a hero he is, but I'm pretty sure that when he does think about it theres a sense of satisfaction.

Snipers have some serious psychological problems afterwards. I've known two and both of them have issues with what they had done.

So is this going to keep the Afghan government from imposing ridiculous laws in their country?
