Plain and simple, the kicker missed his kick, and very easily could have missed it the same way for a shorter kick. He wasn't forced to kick with a low trajectory.

Have you ever actually attempted a field goal?
20 yarder compared to a 35 yard is quite different...think about it this way, if you kick little left or little right, by the time the 35 yarder gets to the uprights, its going to be wide right or wide left...wheres the 20 yarder will be long through for a good kick...Also kickers are funny, thats why coaches try freezing the kickers by taking a timeout, so all the sudden he has to make a 35 yarder that changes his mindset.
Oh and theres nothing there to say the play would've gone the same way had it been a shorter kick. He would've just stepped right into it instead of worrying about pushing it left or right.
That has to be one of the worst calls ever. He didn't spike it anyones face, he merely got rid of the ball.
