You do the crime, you do the time.
Bet you won't "forget" next month...

An honest mistake is not a crime. I'd be miffed too if I had a wallet full of monthly passes and I got jacked on the first day of the month. I'd certainly hope for a bit of leniency.
And I don't know why you put forget in quotation marks. The guy buys a pass every month. It's not like the price of the pass is pro-rated. He's still going to pay the full $75 or whatever it is. It does him absolutely no good to "forget".

I've never met a transit cop I couldn't outrun!

Neither is not paying for transit, although not having proof of payment will get you a fine....Now it is up to CT to decide if they want to be lenient with someone who clearly is an honest customer.

Well, I don't NORMALLY speed (just play along), but the one time I did, the cop wrote me a ticket.
Should the ticket get thrown out because I only did it once? Should the cop believe me just because I say I usually don't speed?
To me, these are both petty crimes that shouldn't have the punishment rate that they do, but if you do the crime you do the time. That's what people bring up in other threads. You know, those law-abiding citizens that are the lifeblood of Calgarypuck.
I'm not saying I would have written him a ticket, because if I were the officer, I might have given a warning. In fact, I fully support fighting the ticket. But the transit officer was just doing their job, within their jobly parameters.

You don't agree that MarchHare should have been given a warning?

I think a warning was in order, but that's not what happened. You always run into people who had some piss in their cornflakes in the morning.
And you know, jobly parameters. Like for example, Darryl Sutter's jobly parameters are to DO WHATEVER HE WANTS!

If he didn't have months of old ones in his wallet, I'd completely agree.

Nothing better than the "Hollier Than You" type that show on CP in threads like these.
The guy asked a legitimate question, no where did he ask for people to come and give their opinion as to whether he should pay his fine or not, or give their imput as to his guilt or not.
The guy asked if he had any recourse. Unless you know the law, or have had a similar experience, what's the point of posting in these threads? Trying to get your post count up?

My hollier than thou attitude is just to make a point, that it happens in every thread. But that makes me the perpetrator/perpetuator of the trouble.
I'd fight it if I were him, and show the receipt from when you buy the Aug. pass. You never know!

So what happens if you 'forget' to renew your registation, or your insurance?
Same thing, no?

Not at all the same thing.
If you get into a multi-vehicle accident after letting your insurance lapse, the other driver is screwed since you don't have liability coverage. If I buy a transit pass (which I do every month) on the 4th instead of the 1st, Calgary Transit receives the same amount for my ticket either way -- there's no victim.

That really sucks. A while back when I worked in DT the easiest place to get a transit pass was next to work. Seeing as the circumstances were very similar to yours (first day of work was in the middle of the week) I totally forgot about getting the pass before the weekend. Those transit cops found me but let me go very easily just telling me I should have it before wednesday. He told me they usually give 2 day leeway from the first work week. Really sucks for you, but I'm sure if you fight it they'll let it go.

You had good intentions and no ill will, what you get for that is sympathy and a pat on the back. They put radar where police know they are going to catch speeders and they put more train cops on the train the first week of each month because they know they'll catch more people without their pass, just the way of the world.

While I empathize because the fare system for Calgary Transit is a total joke, keep in mind that you can buy transit passes at 90% of the places in Calgary that sell them at LEAST a full week ahead of the end of the month.
Basically if you just buy one on the 25th of every month, instead of the 1st or whatever, you'll be fine.

A coworker has a subscription or something for Calgary Transit monthly passes. He gets them in the mail a week or so before the beginning of the month and never has to worry about this stuff.
