As mentioned numerous times already, symbols often transcend their original meaning (fair or not), and I can certainly understand why someone would be opposed to the Confederate flag -- regardless of its original meaning. To many, it has little or nothing to do with honouring Lee. And as such being opposed to the Confederate flag has nothing to do with supporting the Union flag.

General Robert E. Lee was vastly overrated. This probably isn't the thread for it, but I want to throw it out there anyway.

Lincoln did a pretty good job handling the country during the war. He was handcuffed by a few things and had to deal with some pretty inept running the war effort early on.

I grew up in the southern states. (florida) I tried to understand it but never really did. I am 100% german and moved here in 1989 its like watching ######s flying a third reich flag. Those pigs piss me off in the worst way.

You have to give him props for being one of the few who got on with his life after the Civil War and did something productive.

And those of you that think Lincoln is overrated give your heads a shake. But on second thought you may be right. Lincoln is "too obvious".

Also as another poster referenced what most people think is the Confederate flag is really the Confederate Battle Flag because the actual flag of the CSA, the 'stars and bars' from a distance on the ships looked like the union flag.

The second CSA flag - hard to see it here, but the flag was white with the battle flag in the corner.

The last CSA flag

That last one looks like the Confederates have just invaded the Canadian flag, and we totally lost the Yukon.

There's a sign on Highway 23, just North of Lethbridge for:

Kendra's
Kountry
Kennels

What were they thinking?

I have a book on great speeches someone compiled and it includes a speech on conceding from the union that a southern senator spoke in the Senate. His arguments were compelling. The southern States legally had a right to walk away from the Union. The Federal government overstepped the constitution and the principles of free association by sending the army in. I'm glad slavery was stopped but Lincoln broke the spirit of confederation to do it.

Seceding.

Lincoln's refusal to let that happen is, perhaps, the single most important event in American history.

I wonder how much of a fight would be put up if the Southern States wanted to secede today.

Yep. Now the states don't have the rights the founding fathers wanted them to have.

I love how every other race on the planet can have signs, flags, etc. to be proud of their race, but when a white person does it, it's racist, their a hillbilly, etc.

I don't have a racist inch to my body but I find it down right revolting how white people are almost forced into being shamed if they are proud of their race.

True, but the alternative of two (or more) nations instead of one Union would've been far less successful IMO.

Oh please. Maybe because proclaiming pride in your skin colour is stupid? There hasn't been a day in my life I have woken up and thought "god I am so proud to be a caucasian!"

There's virtually no reason for any Canadian to fly that Flag. Simple as that.

Unless they're transplanted from the south. Which a lot of people are....but I doubt its these folks.

There are a lot of rednecks in Alberta....I guess they think this flag symbolizes their way of life.
