I love the comments from people.

Don't fall for it? Really? How did someone so dumb ever learn how to use a computer.

Last night on CTV, they were saying that Claresholm, about an hour and a half south of Calgary, could be completely out of gas by the weekend.
My cousin is making a family trip down there to visit my Grandma some time Thursday or Friday. Told him to bring a Gas Can just incase.
They also mentioned that prices can't go up due to supply/demand. Prices still have to stay compeditive with the rest of the country and the US.

I drove through Claresholm on Sunday. Only Esso had gas. I didn't pay attention to Nanton, but I heard that they were in the same boat.
Here in Lethbridge, I was at Canadian Tire and they were only offering regular grade gas, so I asked the attendant and she said that they are fine and in fact are getting their regularly scheduled truck in today. She did say that a couple of Essos around Lethbridge were out of gas though, and possibly some Petro Cans.

Perhaps Superstore gets its gas from the Petro refinery also. It's crazy how fast our gas runs out when a refinery is damaged
|
It's not like there's a '7-11 refinery' a 'Superstore refinery', a 'Safeway refinery' et al. In Alberta there's pretty much 3 big refineries: Imperial's Strathcona, Petro-Canada's, and Shell's Scotford refinery that serve not only Alberta, but also sell into other markets. So in essence the Superstore gas station can sign up supply contracts that source fuel from any of the three refineries.

I drove to/from Claresholm yesterday. No gas at all in Claresholm, and only the UFA in Nanton had any. The Shawnessy SS in Calgary didn't have any either. At least I found out that gas warning light is a bunch of BS.

Not really damage, just a lightning strike that caused a shutdown.
Not a big deal, but it's not like these refineries can just be turned back on. Startup can take days or weeks depending on the size, and mode of shutdown.

I don't get that part. Last time the refinery in Edmonton was shut down unexpectedly and we had a shortage, the gas prices shot up. Prices never stay competitive with the rest of the country, they vary quite a bit. Are the companies specifically keeping prices the same to do us a favor?

I think with that one what happened was gas went up to curb demand, but people heard of a gas shortage and prices going up, so verybody topped up their tanks. So they actually made the shortage worse.
Makes me wonder if there might just be something to those "don't buy gas on X day" emails- if the supply chain is this vulnerable.

Update: August 1
Gas is scarce in Lethbridge this weekend.
I was out and about running some errands and I thought that I should fill up with gas because I may not get a chance to do so (or remember to) for a few days. I went to Canadian Tire Gas Bar on the North side of Lethbridge and the lineup there was horrendous. There were so many people lined up that access to Canadian Tire, the mall and the other stores was blocked from a couple of entrances. Ok, so I won't go there... or anywhere else. I went to all the gas stations on the northiside of Lethbridge and only one other station had gas... and they were selling premium grade gas for the cost of regular gas.
When I got home my wife was talking to her mother, who was supposed to have gone away for the weekend. My wife's parents hit the 6 closest gas stations to their house and they were all out of gas, so they decided to stay home and not risk running out of gas.
Gas is scarce in Lethbridge, how is it in Calgary? I'm supposed to go to Edmonton next weekend, anybody know the gas situation up there?
I just did a search and found this online:

I drove around High River to see what the gas situation is. The Kimmers near my place is out as well as the Esso. Extra Foods is down to regular only. Fas gas is almost out too. I suspect by Monday this town will be bone dry.
A blurb in our local paper had the owner of the Esso saying this shortage will be an on going problem till September.

My wife went to 3 gas stations yesterday in SE Calgary before finally finding gas at a shell.
I know it's because of the refinery shut down, but it's still a somewhat scary view of what could happen in future years if we're still quite dependent on this stuff to get around.

Instead of snow days it'll be gas days.
EDIT: That's a good idea actually, maybe it will force more companies to allow telecommuting.

I'm not sure if they're out of gas, but the Esso in Turner Valley had their price taken off the board earlier today.

Cherneski is not optimistic about how soon supply levels will return to normal.
“I was talking to my territorial manager this morning and he said nothing’s really changed. It’s still tighter than heck right now,” Cherneski said Thursday. “I don’t expect to have gas much longer. We’ll be out by lunchtime.”
“I got a letter this morning from the distribution manager...they expect it is going to be tight until September,” Cherneski said. “The problem in Alberta is that we don’t have enough refining capacity...there’s no money at the refinery level, so nobody’s going to build. People better start realizing that this is going to be normal.”

This is normal? How in the hell is this normal... blaming the overall capacity in Alberta. If it was normal, then shortages like this would be happening quite often.
None of this makes sense.... as last time more than one refinery was down, the shortage was miniscule (and prices went up). Someone has really dropped the ball here. Why aren't prices going up to curb demand?

Lethbridge could be completely out of gas by Monday? wow
