My point is that he hasn't faced anyone of importance unlike what was stated. Most times the best fighters seek out the best fighters to fight. Because the Heavyweight division in the UFC was never a strong point so therefore not their main focus the top Heavyweight went elsewhere to fight.

To answer your question "My question in return is, who in the heavyweight division is more deserving of this title shot?" my honest reply would be I don't care... I really think the whole deserving of this title shot point of view is a sales pitch no different then Top 40 for record sales.... For myself it's all about selling PPV's and putting on cards that make me want to dig into my pocket and pay $50. I don't care who the challenger is or if the belt is in contention.... does the fight bring enough excitement that I don't don't mind spending my hard earned money for it.

Who was Mir supposed to seek out? We all know Fedor isn't an option, Cro-Cop hasn't been around for the last little while and wasn't all that impressive in his previous UFC stint, Barnett has never been an option, Kongo could have been an option but I don't put him any higher than some of the guys Mir has beat, Couture's been in and out of retirement, Arlovski's a shadow of his former self.

I just don't see any guys that Mir could have sought out to fight to make his record look any better. And besides, fighters don't get to dictate who they fight. Sure his record would look better if he beat Couture 4 years ago but that wasn't an option.

I don't think his record is incredibly impressive, but I don't see how you can say he hasn't sought out the top fighters. He would've been an absolute moron to turn down the UFC opportunity to chase Fedor and Barnett around various promotions that may or may not be in business tomorrow.

That has been what my point has been about... so in short you agree, now we're just discussing why it's not impressive and reason for it. I don't think it's really necessary unless it's just a topic of conversation and we're looking to trade perspectives

Lol, ya I guess we agree pretty much completely actually. The only point I'm trying to make is that it's about as impressive as it could possibly be. You can't really hold it against a guy that there hasn't been much in the way of talent at his weight class when he's been able to fight. If it wasn't for the bike accident he would've added a couple bigger names to his resume, but those could be losses so who knows.

I think the comparison of Mir v. Lesnar when it comes to records is focused more on the fact that Mir actually has one, not really on the strength of them.

I'm not a big UFC fan, because to be honest I think a bunch of them are just wrestling fans who just moved on to the real thing (and a bunch of wannabe's go to the gym and train thinking they'll be the next MMA hotshots), but when GSP fights, it's always a nice event to see. So I'll take a stab at making predictions with the fighters I know:

Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Alan Belcher
Paulo Thiago vs. Jon Fitch
Michael Bisping vs. Dan Henderson
Thiago Alves vs. Georges St-Pierre
Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar

I'm not so sure about Henderson winning because of Bisping's age, but if it's a takedown match, Henderson will probably win. Both seem to be pretty good guys though, so it sucks that one is going to lose. St.Pierre always brings the best, so there's little doubt unless he gets caught with his guard down. Mir and Lesnar is really interesting. I'm just choosing Mir because of speed, but for such a big guy Lesnar is real fast too. Is the Mir/Lesnar fight the final match of the night?

A tad off-topic, but does anyone else find this "showdown Joe" guy on Sportsnet a tad annoying? Almost like the play-by-play homers on some sports teams who think they're part of the organization they're covering? Just the fact he calls himself "showdown" is annoying enough, but his reporting demeanor reminds me of a kid who never made it, but now because he's this close to the action, he believes he's part of it. Just a random rant. I think he's an annoying tool.

Dong Hyun Kim vs. TJ Grant
Matt Grice vs. Shannon Gugerty
Tom Lawler vs. CB Dollaway
Mark Coleman vs. Stephan Bonnar
Mac Danzig vs. Jim Miller
Jon Jones vs. Jake O’Brien
Main Bouts:
Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Alan Belcher
Paulo Thiago vs. Jon Fitch
Michael Bisping vs. Dan Henderson
Thiago Alves vs. Georges St-Pierre
Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar

I'm terrible at predictions, I'm too much of a cheerleader then a forecaster.

A couple notes... I don't think Danzig can afford this loss, that being the reason for selecting him because I think he has no choice but to be at his best
Thiago over Fitch, never been able to buy into Fitch. My fault really, all I ever think about iwth him is the timeout he called vs Joslin
Mark Coleman: I would rather be seeing him face off with an equal then this type of matchup (legends, past prime matchup). Much in the same light as the Couture vs Nog coming up
Henderson: hoping he has one more title rein before he moves on and if thats the case he needs to make easy work of Bisping to remove any doubts
Lesnar: Don't care for this matchup at all but if there has to be a winner then I go with Lesnar. The hype machine behind him will be overboard so much that eventually Dana White will try and cash in a bring Fedor over. I think Lesnar and his hype has a better chance then Mir winning

Mir, GSP, Hendo, Fitch and Akiyama FTW

in related news, Vancouver could be the next Canadian UFC locale; also, the UFC has signed Cro Cop to a 3 fight deal despite reports to the contrary after UFC 99

You think Bisping seems like a good guy?

I always found him to be a huge dick. It was great seeing him get his ass kicked tonight.

Sounds like GSP had another solid showing. Any details for those of us who didn't get to watch it?

According to TSN sounded like the Miller/Danzig fight was really bloody.

In white just in case ........

Bascially was able to take down Alves easily at will and control from the top. I think because Alves being concerned about being taken down it affected his stand-up which was pretty even between the two.

Blew his groin in the third (?4th) but was able to fight through it. You could hear him tell his corner at the end of the 4th that his groin was gone.

Corner's reply was brillant even though I can't remember exactly what it was ... I don't give a dam, that's not important, it makes no difference or something along those lines.

GSP basically dominated the whole fight. I think he had 9 takedowns and Alves had none (I think), it was 50-45, 50-44, 50-45, for GSP.

I missed the Lesner fight when I went to buy UFC 2009 just now.

I am a bit pissed that they didn't show more of the undercard on this. This was actually a pretty crap PPV. At least one of the earlier fights was super bloody because it was all over the canvas.

Lesner is a total moron and whereas I have purchased his last two PPV, I can't see me getting another one of his. I really didn't enjoy his schtick and won't be wasting my money on him again.

GSP though, I'll pay to watch him fight again.
