I have never heard anyone clap upon landing. And I've flown my fair share. Never. Ever. Really? Y'all aren't just pulling my leg, are ya?

A few years back I was flying home from my brothers place in Minneapolis. We flew through some nasty turbulance that lasted about a half hour. Some passengers clapped when we landed back home in Calgary. LOL I remeber telling the guy beside me that all this up and down was like riding a rollercoaster. He had a look on his face as if he was ready to puke.

Ahaha... I remember a flight from Hong Kong to Vancouver... We were going through some turbulence. The old woman across the aisle and a row behind was just sitting there calmly sleeping (no, she wasn't dead, because she woke up and got off the flight) while the younger (20s maybe) female sitting directly in front of her let out short bursts of screams in panic.

Some things should not be done in the theater. Ask Pee Wee Herman.

In South America, I noticed people clap after every landing. Maybe they had low expectations about arriving safely.

Clapping in a movie theater is about as dumb as sitting in your living room and clapping at the end of a good tv show.
The tv appreciates your applause about as much as the movie screen does.
Some people are just too stupid to know better.

Clapping in a movie theatre when the movie is good is only acceptable if you also riot inside the movie theatre when the movie is bad.

The clapping at the premier of Phantom Menace was interesting.
The group singing and costumes at the premier of Serenity on the other hand was uncomfortable and scary.
Making any noise in a movie theater is annoying as hell as far as I'm concerned. I barely go to movies anymore because I usually walk out bitter and angry at the dumb little teenage dorks who talk through the entire thing while browsing facebook on their cell phones. I pay 12-13$ for that? No thanks.

My favorite clapping moment was at the premier for Spiderman 3. After the awesomeness of Spiderman 2 and the trailers, everybody was pretty jacked up. Once the movie wore on though, people started getting a little confused as to when the awesome was going to happen. When it ended there was a spattering of applause. One guy yells from the back "What the hell are you clapping for? That was S**T". I laughed pretty hard.
I vividly remember seeing 3 ninjas when i was probably 10. That movie got a standing ovation from grown people. It was surreal ... i was 10 and I could tell something was off. Then again it was Red Deer, so it was probably the most normal part of my entire day.

I involuntarily clap when something hilarious happens. I think it's related to knee slapping. However, I'm not going to go see Bruno... ever. I can't stand flamboyant gayness like that. I don't have a problem with gay people, but that's a mockery in the first place, and flamers just aren't cool in my books.
You can be gay, but you don't need the lisp and the flamboyant clothing.

A number of years ago we were flying into Calgary and had some pretty bad turbulance. And by "bad" I mean we had two missed approaches upon landing. At the end I thought the pilot was going to put us down on Deerfoot, and at the last second did an abrupt turn and slipped us onto the runway that runs NW-SE.
I started clapping when we slowed down, and maybe a handful of others as well. But it was only about 15 out of the ~200 people on the plane. This was pre- 911 so I actually made a point of thanking the pilot; saying to him "thank you for saving our lives."
But on a regular flight; I would say that clapping is a little much.

The first time I experienced clapping in a movie was when I moved to a small town when I was 13. We went to Salmon Arm to watch D2: The Mighty Ducks and the entire theatre clapped and cheered for every goal. They went crazy when Dwayne roped the dude from Iceland. It was ridiculous!

Did they boo when he was subsequently given 2 minutes for roping?

If that's the worst thing you encounter from movie-goers, consider yourself lucky. I refuse to see hit movies in theatres the first 2-3 weeks just to avoid all the idiots(especially if the movie is targeted to a younger audience, ie Bruno).
On a side note with clapping, just because I just came off vacation so its fresh in my mind, I hate when the whole plane starts clapping when you touch down at your arrival airport in your destination point. It's just cheesy and awkward.
EDIT: I only read page 1 of this thread, I see someone else mentioned this. Glad I'm not alone on this one.

I had that when we landed in Cabo, Mexico last year, and again when we landed in Cuba two weeks ago. I refused to take part. So awkward and stupid. I know they're just pumped to start their vacation, but it's still dumb.

On flights I've been on to Mexico and Hawaii people clapped, especially Hawaii which was a long time ago..I think it's cheering because they are at their holiday destination. I've never experienced clapping on domestic flights.

I agree. I've been on at least 45 flights, and have never experienced people clapping.
I usually thank the pilot if I notice him, though.
