I was going to post something about this. There is someone who drives a dark gray Civic Hybrid that is going through yards looking for bottles and taking them. He took some bags from the side of my house about 3 months ago and got busted by my neighbour. He told her that he was from the Hells Angels and he was told to come pick them up. She tried to chase him off but he just continued to grab bags and put them in his trunk.
Last week, he hit again from the back alley. Our neighbours had some bottles by their fireplace bump out on the otherside. She busted him again and he pushed her out of the way and knocked her into their garden.
The guy has been hitting up backyards all over New Brighton, Copperfield, McKenzie Towne, Cranston, etc and he has warrants for theft. He also has an assault warrant now as well.
So for those of you that don't think it's a big deal...
It's trespassing and theft.

I wasn't trying to piss on your rant or tease, I honestly didn't know what that meant until it came out as blue-collar. LOL

Probably, but I guess in this particular neighborhood the presence of the blue bins has drawn in more "undesirables" than were previously around. It makes sense, it's a readily available source of empties and sure beats digging through cans, so I'd expect more people to head out to look for a score in the areas with bins. It's not really that much of a stretch to see more petty crime coming from this presence, and even if it doesn't actually happen the perception is there.
I personally could care less about people taking my cans, but then I don't exactly live in a family focused suburb.

So, if he has warrants out, why doesnt someone just call the cops when they see him?

I don't care if "they" want to check for bottles, but checking the garage door and going into the yard -- sounds like he was looking for more than a couple pop cans to make his money.

What do other cities who have these kind of programs do in these situations?

Did they damage something? If your intent was on recycling containers, then who cares if someone comes around and takes them, making some money off of it. It sounds like you have the attitude of "if I don't get money from returning this stuff, then no one will". As long as they stick to taking bottles/cans, then I don't see the problem with it. If you are so concerned, take them yourself.
You sound concerned for your safety... but really, have they done anything yet or are you just basing this worry on assumptions that bums are dangerous? Your rant sounds like you are grasping at straws.

Your comment sounds like you can't read!!
The guy tried to see if he could get in my neighbours garage!!!!
...So, according to your "logic" ... I should just wait til something bads happens eh?
.....F'en Brilliant!

When I had a condo downtown I personally found the bottle-pickers to be quite handy. I threw my garbage in the bin, left my bottles out beside the bin, and they were usually gone within 15-20 minutes. I don't really need the $0.05/bottle and I didn't have space to store a bunch of empties in my condo anyways.
I think homeless people are around in all communities (via Transit) and they usually go through the alleys. The blue bins have just made things a little easier in terms of bottle collection for them... not a big deal in my eyes.
I would be upset about the garage door testing, and trespassing into people's backyards. At least you yelled at them and they moved on. Still is frustrating because there's really nothing you can do about it.

Yes, you are absolutely right!
Think about this! .......
Do you think that the "undesireables" plans may have changed just slightly when they found out (Alberta Gov.) that a 4 Litre Milk Container could Net them an easy 25 cents??????
Damn straight!!

I lived downtown too, when I was younger. 13 AVE & 1ST ST.
I always put my emptys in the back and they were gone within seconds.
The difference is, There are many more temptations in the Burbs. when you have back yards and peoples stuff and garages and on and on... What's stopping them from "testing" that door, gate etc..?

Well... I sort of just meant that there's nothing you can really do about the trespassers and garage testers if you see it happening, other than just yelling at them. I doubt the cops would be able to help much if you called them. That's all.
*quickly backs away from ranting man...

Here in Vancouver, the bottle pickers can be a real nuissance. They rifle through the dumpster throwing garbage all over alley, very rarely cleaning up after. Using our strata fees, our building now pays someone just to clean this crap up.
It may be minimally beneficial for the environment, but this reckless sense of entitlement to someone else's garbage is wrong.

*Ranting Man feels bad now because he realizes that "Peanut" is in the "Family way"
..I am just trying to make the point that if they continue to dig and they continue to get NOTHING, they will eventually stop "Digging"
BTW: Congratulations!

I appreciate your input.
But, just so that you are aware of what's going on here, Calgarians have always had the onus of recyclying put on them by way of taking recyclables to depots on their own. recently they have introduced a curbside recycling program, This City is new to this and so far there been issues to say the least.

I love the bottle pickers in Van, one of my favorite things in the city. I have never been to a depot, and my bottles get taken within minutes. Sometimes I will put bottles in the alley, go back inside to get more, and the first ones are already gone! it's like magic!!
I understand the OP not liking them trying out garages etc. but my experience with this in Van has been nothing but positive. 99% of them are harmless bottle pickers.
