I think the facts that he was the most sought after pitchman and that the products he pitched have made millions pretty much answer your question for you.
You are in the minority. Bigtime.

Am I the only one who has never heard of this guy? I'd seen his face on TV but I sure didn't know his name. Now he dies and it's huge news -- the biggest story on this here internet.
What have I been missing?

I only knew who he was from watching 10 minutes of Conan O'Brien last week . . . . . the only 10 minutes of Conan I've seen so far.
Looked like a steroid freak but, of course, that couldn't be possible could it? A suspiciously young age to be dying though.

I've never really needed anything pitched by him, but I will tell you if I ever have a need for a diamond ring, Spence Diamonds will not get my business. If you annoy the piss out of me when listening to the radio or watching TV - No Business For You! [/soup nazi]

RIP. Regardless of what you think of the guy, you all have to admit he had an awesome beard.... one of the best.
Right up there with the guy on 'Mantracker'.
He made vince from ScamWow looks like a little puppy. He was the alpha dog of tv informercials.

As someone who has been in sales for my entire working career, I have to say that the guy was an excellent pitchman. If I ever ran a class called "selling on merit 101" his inifomercials would be the main ciriculum. You rarely saw the guy ever bash a competitors product, selling his products (as camppy as they were) on what they can do, not what others cannot. And his annoying loud as hell schtick was exactly that, as he was very self deprecating about the situation. I thought he was a neat guy, and a really cool example of the average Joe making it big. I for one would have loved to have seen the Taco Bell commercials he was going to do.

I hear ya, mate. Agreed 100%. There's certain kind of advertising that pisses me off so much that I actually actively boycott the business. Spence is probably #1 on my list of places that I will never, ever even set foot in, let alone purchase from. I kinda wish they were a burger joint so that I could more actively boycott, but alas, all I can do is keep on not needing diamonds.
Their latest round of ads that I've been hearing on QR is so f'ing lame I have to switch the channel. Seriously, I think I may be damaging my button #2 by ramming it so hard when the spence guy comes on QR.
In fact, I'm so upset now, talking about that spence SOB, I have no idea what thread I'm even posting in anymore. I've completely forgotten my point. All I know is that I hate the spence guy.
edit* Oh yeah... Billy Mays. Whatever.

On topic, I was always more of a fan of Vince 'Shamwow' Offer than Billy. I was really hoping for them to have some sort of epic showdown one day, I think the earth would have exploded due to it.
