Burris still has no clue when he's in trouble and when to eat the ball.. he's been in the league how many years now?

tough break for the Stamps. It's only first game so I am not really worried about it too much. I found some positives on this lost though.
#1. Our special team played well.
#2. Our offense managed to come back even though we were missing 3 of our starters in OL Newman, OL Pilon and R Rambo.
#3. Our rookies played well.
- R/Returner Titus Ryan were good in special team and he made some plays in receiving. Yes, he did fumble once but that was a rookie mistake and he will learn from it.
- LB Tristan Black blocked a punt in the 2nd half and made some good tackles on special teams.
- DB Tate were not bad. He made some good plays and he answered the bell when Calvillo tried to pick on him.
- DB Amadi were burned a few times in the 1st half but managed to get back into the game in the 2nd half.
- Justin Brown had a fumble recovery.
Both teams were sloppy tonight but like I said it is the first game so no worries.

Very frustrating to watch. The guy gets by on talent but he's just not a smart quarterback.

I agree the missed call sucked, but there are missed calls in every league, and its still like preseason for the refs, they aren't quite on thier games yet. the reffing wasnt great this game, but it was entertaining

Yup. Henry has to take a sack or throw it away. Forcing things results in turn-overs.

CGY didn't deserve to be in that game. Only special teams and the rain kept it close. MTL was moving the ball at will, whenever it wasn't raining.

Joffrey needs more touches. Defence will take time to gel. O-Line was missing two key players.

Offense just seemed out of sync all night. Burris and the receivers didn't seems to have the same routes in mind - or were Burris throws just that far off?

I'm thinking a combination of both. Things just weren't clicking last night. It's pretty sad when your offensive yards are merely half of the other team's.

Not only was the offense lagging, but the defense didn't really do their part either. How was Calvillo able to throw nearly 100% during the first half of the game? The Stamps had pretty bad coverage and seemed to just leave big gaps that made it easy for the Al's to move up-field.

If anything was good about the game, it was the special teams by far. The only reason the Stamps were able to get any sort of offense going was because of the special teams. Two punt blocks, a TD off a kickoff return. They helped make the score look a lot closer than the actual game was.

I'm watching that game and I don't even notice Burris hardly at all. It was the O-line. They were brutal. No holes to run through and the d-line for the Als was in Burris's face often. That line was such an unexpected strength last year. Hope the injuries aren't long term as that version of the line sure does not look good.

Fully agree with the Hank comment, disagree about the Joffrey touches comments in the sense that I don't believe that they intended to pass so often going into the game. When you're down 20 points before your second series on offense, it dramatically changes the playbook in favor of the pass. I would argue that he would have touched the ball way more times in a situation where they didn't start so behind the 8-ball.

I rack up the loss to two things:

1. Flat start, The defence got man-handled by MTL in the first half because they simply were not as intense and failed to match the 'compete-level intensity' that the Als were displaying early on. Sometimes when you beat a team all three times you played them the previous year including in the Grey Cup final it serves only to make the opposition more determined and the Stamps more complacent. Once the Stamps pulled within a touchdown the defence started hitting hard and playing better on the line.

2. The reason why they had the best record in the CFL and won the Grey Cup last year over contenders like BC and MTL is because the Stamps simplified the game and focused on execution. The result was dramatically lower turnovers and other less-prepared teams made more costly mistakes. (Last night Montreal provided the Stamps with 2 blocked punts, and a touchdown kick return, one fumble inside field goal range and an interception at mid-field, even a useless offense that didn't turn over the football would have won last night. Burris really needs to settle down and not try to do too much. Often in the CFL the other team will beat themselves if you give them enough rope to hang themselves. The key is to not beat them to the noose.)

Another beef: Last night, what does the team do it's first offensive possesion of the season? A brand new never before tried in a game situation 'Wild Cat' formation that results in a botched snap for a 13 yard loss.

RANT Start

WTF is Cortez thinking: You're already down 7-0, these guys have been practicing less than a month and some of the guys are brand new CFL football let alone to the team and you're running an unconventional gadget play the first play of the 2009 season? Killed any second down attempt being 23 yards from the marker and spotted Montreal good field position against a shell-shocked defense less than 2 minutes after they gave up an easy touchdown. I thought this set the tone for what followed.

RANT END

I didn't get to see the game, but you have to remember that the guys on the other side of the ball aren't sharp either, so the chances of pulling off some trickery are higher now than they will be in 3 months. Any time you call a trick play it's either going to be a big gain or a big loss (or both teams blow it and it's a wash), it's the nature of the play.
