According to this it appears that you cannot perform the upgrade from Windows XP or the Vista Starter and Home Basic editions. If you downgraded from Vista to XP you can still do the update to Windows 7 but you will have to install it fresh and wipe everything. Since all i have are valid copies of XP Media Center Edition and Vista Home Basic it looks like i`m out of luck on this deal.

That site is just for if you purchased Vista or a PC after June 26, 2009, you get a free upgrade.

Being able to actually perform the upgrade and being able to purchase an upgrade version are two different things..

If you have Windows XP you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade at the proper vendors (Amazon, FS, etc), and it's a valid license, but you will not be able to actually do the install. As you say you will have to do a fresh wipe, but part of the install process will have you either place the valid XP or Vista CD in the drive for it to verify, or it might ask you for your license key for XP or Vista.

So you should still be able to be part of the deal no problem.

I just ran the Upgrade Advisor and it says I can only upgrade my Vista 64bit Premium to Windows 7 64bit Premium or Ultimate. This sucks cause I wanted to buy and upgrade to Windows 7 Professional and I don't feel like paying full price for Ultimate upgrade. BTW my Vista is OEM being it came with my notebook.

That's weird, why would they let you upgrade to the lowest and the highest version, but not the middle one?

Did it say Windows 7 Premium, or Windows 7 Home Premium, because there is no Windows 7 Premium.

Yes it's Home Premium. Now that I read the message more closely I'm more confused. It looks like Home Premium or Ultimate for in-place upgrade. It also says if I choose to upgrade to a different version I need to perform a clean install. I don't know if that means if I buy Professional upgrade if it'll let me do a clean install on my OEM Vista Home Premium notebook or if it means buy the full version at full price and do a clean install.

Should mean just install, as far as I've read the only requirements for an upgrade version of Windows 7 the only requirement is SOME version of XP or Vista, doesn't matter which one (from a able to legally purchase and install point of view, not a will it install without reformatting point of view).

From Microsoft's site on Windows 7 Professional:

Quote:
  • Running Windows Vista?
  • If you have Windows Vista, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. You can do a clean install (back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications) or an in -place upgrade (Windows 7 installs over Windows Vista).
  • Running Earlier Versions?
  • If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications.
