My parents Murano has a back up cam and it's pretty helpful if backup up close to something.

Yeah I find large SUVs and Vans very hard to tell. I honestly thought when I was parallel parking my sisters SUV I was going to drive it through the wall when she kept telling me to reverse. Only to find later I still had 2 feet space so I must have had an extra 4 when we started haha. Maybe we can merge this thread now with the confessions thread

We have a Volvo XC90 and absolutely love it. Other than the Acura MDX I've never really driven anything else for long in that class. MDX is also nice but is a firm ride made for the driver that likes to feel the road a bit. The Volvo is sort of like sitting on the most comfortable couch you've ever sat on. Well a couch going 80 mph.

A buddy of mine bought the BMW a year ago and has had several problems with it. He thinks it is a lemon. He is getting rid of it.

Murano is a solid pick
The XC70 and V70R are IMO really worth a test drive. Very.nice.cars. I test drove a V70R 6 speed the other day and really realllllly want it...the XC60 is more like what you described however I am always wary of vehicles in their first year of production.
Also could consider the Mercedes GLK, the new Subaru Forester XT and if you wanted to wait the Cadillac CTS wagon

No. We still have the factory all seasons on it. Only 35K on them so far. We might change to another all season before next winter though. The factory ones are more suited for a summer drive.
Michelin Lat Tours would be the bomb on that car!!

Just bought a Santa Fe, for my wife - frikkin great vehicle and the rated the highest in the Lemonaide book.
Whatever CXV or SUV he gets, make sure it has AWD - it makes all the difference in the winter.

My friend has an FX35 and it's about the nicest vehicle I've been in. It just doesn't suit me for throwing dogs in the back, canoes on the roof, and muddy boots on the carpet. Were my lifestyle a little more "urban" it would be my number one pick for sure.

Fair enough, but some people don't want to be heading to the shop as much as you will end up doing with a German vehicle. I don't mind it, but it's not for everyone. If I was getting something like this (i.e. not performance oriented or fun to drive) I'd go Japanese or American.
Land Rovers... really nice vehicles... for the first day until everything starts breaking. By far the worst made cars on the road. Any report on reliability will back this one up.

Subaru and Audi are leaps and bounds ahead of everyone for every day AWD systems.
Nissan and Mitsubishi have killer systems for the EVO and the GT-R as well, but those are different types of beasts.
I agree with you that Highlanders are great though. The most back seat room of any vehicle I've ever been in.

Have a look at the new MB GLK350.. Great little truck. we have been selling them like crazy. start at $42k nicely equipped at $47 or so.. Also the new Q5 is very nice

I own a 2008 Edge, and I don't have a single complaint so far. I find if you're tall (like me), its the most comfortable car I've ever driven from a standpoint of everything being where it should be.

I have a 2008 Saturn Outlook. Lots of room, good power and it's not ugly. If you want something more posh, the Buick Enclave is a nice alternative.

What does he want to use it for? Or just he just want a "crossover"?
It pains me to say but the CRV/Rav4 are actually quite nice vehicles in this segment.
That said, I've always viewed crossovers to have car like utility with truck like road manners, worst of both words in my opinion

Test drove the Santa Fe and CRV last weekend. The Santa Fe drove pretty nice and the price was really nice but their interior finishing looks horrible. It looks American. The CRV was pretty good but damn expensive. Close to $40k with the top of the line model.
Ended up buying a used MDX. I'm selling my civic hybrid if anyone is interested. Going from 4.9litres/100km in the city to 14.5litres!!!!! Ugh. My son owes me alot.

Ford Edge is the only one I have driven - I loved it but then I dont have high expectations. I drove one for about a month and fell in love with it and would have bought one last year if the markets hadnt shat the bed.

You can get them at crappy for about $150 I think. That is all I know.
